Bari is the “gate to the east”, the third larger city of southern Italy, a small white capital. It is the most important city of region Puglia (Apulia) and one of the most beautiful ports of the Adriatic Sea. It looks at Albania, and has a part of Albanian soul in its culture and language. Bari has many interesting monuments and is a nice place to stay, if you want to visit its lovely district and the charming close Apulian landscapes. Do not come to Bari just for its beaches and sea. Come to discover a small universe.
When to go to Bari
The capital of Apulia has a nice mediterranean climate, which means long, hot summer and warm winter. The period between January and March can be very rainy, but temperatures will never drop below 15°C. July and August can be very hot, with temperature rising above 40°C. So you might plan your trip to Bari in early autumn – September, October – or late spring.
How to get to Bari
Bari has an International Airport dedicated to Pope Karol Wojtyla. It is set 9 km north of the city centre and well connected to it via bus, taxi and even subway. You can also get to the airport by train, thanks to the new railway stop very close to the place. Of course you can get to the city also by ship, to its modern and large port.
Bari has many railway stations, though the most central one is Bari Centrale. Here the national high-speed trains have their stop everyday. If you come by car, you will probably drive along motorways A14 (from Bologna) and A16 (from Naples). Two State Streets – number 96 and 100 – connect Bari to southern Apulia and to the rest of southern Italy.
How to move
You can explore Bari by bus, with over 30 urban bus lines AMTAB. The train is another common means of transport, here, thanks to the many small stations around the city. Forget the car, if you want to move through Bari’s historical core.
You better use the bike sharing service, the taxi service or just … walk! There is a brand new subway : two lines connect the central city to western suburbs and to the airport. In the future, a 14-km tramway shall be also in use.
What to see
The historical centre of Bari consists of a small town inside the town! A group of small houses and very narrow streets, white colour dominating everywhere. It looks like Middle Ages never ended, here. In the historical Old Town you will admire: the cathedral of St Nicholas, the second cathedral of St Sabinus, the noble palaces.
Worth the visit, also: the Norman Castle, the Old Walls, the St Antonio Abbate Fort. Not far from Bari you will enjoy the beauties of Bisceglie, Monopoli, Altamura. The National Park of Alta Murgia is at less than 1 hour drive from the city.
