Rishikesh to Manali: How to Prepare for a road trip
There are a few different ways to get from Rishikesh to Manali, but the most common is by bus. You can take a bus from Rishikesh to Dehradun (ISBT) and then from Dehradun to Chandigarh, and finally from Chandigarh to Manali. The road distance between Dehradun and Manali is 489 km, while the aerial distance from Dehradun to Manali is 231 km.
If you want to go directly from Dehradun to Manali, there is only one bus that plies between these two cities. This bus is operated by State Transport, among others. The minimum time a bus takes to reach is 14 hours and 39 minutes but it all depends on the road condition because from Chandigarh to Rishikesh takes 7 hours.
Manali to Rishikesh

The best route from Manali is via Kharar and Banur. You will avoid the rush of Chandigarh and save 45 minutes.
The second route via Bilaspur is the same, but from Swarghat you will have to turn left to Nalagarh, Pinjore, Outer Panchkula, Kala Amb, Ponta Sahib, Dehradoon and finally Rishikesh. This route has good roads but you will find a rush from Dehradoon to Rishikesh. I prefer this route.
Rishikesh to Manali Distance
There is a direct cab from Rishikesh that takes a minimum of 13h 42m. The comfortable way to reach is by cab and then, you have another option by bus to Manali, which takes 15h 50m. However, the recommended way to reach Manali is by taking a direct cab, which saves both time and money.
Recommendation
While Manali is a famous destination in the North of India, the route to it is not always the most pleasant. It is hard to find a good place to rent a car, and travel agencies charge exorbitant prices for travel. But, when you are in a foreign country, you want something that is convenient and affordable. The best way to travel is by train ( Rishikesh to Chandigarh ) and from Chandigarh to Manali by road.
