Costa Rica Surf Vacation Package – 7 Day of Surf & Tours

Want to have the ultimate beach vacation in Costa Rica and learn to surf? We got you covered! Whether you stay in our beachfront boutique Surf camp or not, this one-week Costa Rica itinerary will leave you rejuvenated and ready to take on the waves, with skills you will have for the rest of your life! Surfing, exploring, and learning – check out our ultimate Costa Rica surf vacation packages.

Iguana Surf is a beachfront surf camp located in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. We offer a variety of surf vacation packages and cater to beginner surfers who want to experience the surfer life without having to adapt to some of the uncomfortable surfer norms. Here you will get smaller learning groups and social settings instead of spring break style camps, a comfy bed over a hammock, and ac and hot water over ocean baths. At Iguana Surf, you will enjoy nature and wildlife OUTSIDE of your sleeping quarters. That’s what makes us one of the best surf resorts in Costa Rica.

Our Costa Rica surf vacation packages make learning to surf and enjoying your downtime a breeze. Want to add some Spanish lessons to your surf vacation package? Add on the Surf & Spanish package, or maybe you want a bit more adventure on your vacation, or you prefer to relax with meditation and yoga. The choice is yours!

The Ultimate Iguana Surf Camp Package is our seven-night stay where our guests get five surf lessons, one surf trip, a video analysis, a photo shoot, and unlimited board rentals. Surf lesson times are determined by the tides and can be held in the morning or afternoon for two hours. This Saturday-to-Saturday itinerary assumes you have chosen this Costa Rica surf vacation package along with the popular Adventure add-on, which includes an ATV tour, adventure combo tour, and sunset catamaran trip.

Day 1:

You will be picked up by our private shuttle at the Guanacaste International Airport at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The shuttle will bring you directly to Iguana Surf Camp in Tamarindo, which takes about an hour and a half. Once you arrive, you will check in at the Iguana Surf Hotel and get settled.

By this point, you will be ready to check out the beach and have a refreshing Costa Rican cerveza. Imperial or Pilsen are popular choices. Don’t worry, our friendly staff will help you decide where to go. Since Iguana Surf is located on the main road in Tamarindo, directly across from the beach, all the best restaurants and bars are within a short walking distance. You can easily walk along the main drag and choose a place to watch the sunset. May we suggest Chiringuito, El Be, or El Vaquero? These bars are all located along the beach and on the same street as Iguana Surf, so you won’t get lost coming back home on your first night! After drinks and dinner, you may want to come back to the hotel to rest up for your first day of surfing or you may stay out a little longer, swapping travel stories with your fellow tourists at Sharky’s.

Day 2:

Your day starts around 7 a.m. if you like lots of time to get ready and time for a hearty breakfast. Our daily breakfast, which is included in your stay, is served upstairs on the terrace at Breakfast Grinds – coffee, fruit, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns – the works! Next, you’ll get fitted for your rash guard and surfboard and head to the beach with your English-speaking, fully certified surf instructor. Once you’re on the beach, your instructor will take you through all the moves and safety information you need for surfing. Once you have got that down pat you are ready to try your new-found knowledge in the water! Don’t worry, your instructor will be with you the entire time.

The two-hour instruction will end at about 11 a.m. and this is a good time to rinse off, get dressed, and hit the town in search of lunch. After lunch, you’ll explore the surrounding beaches and mountains on an exciting ATV tour! This two-hour tour starts at 2:30 p.m. so be sure to bring your sunscreen and a snack.

You’ll be done with this tour with plenty of time for a sunset drink and a nice dinner. Remember, sunset happens every day at 5:30 p.m. If you want a delicious and upscale meal on the beach, check out nearby Pangas.

Day 3:

Due to the tides, your surf lesson starts a little later today so you decide to take a tour of the Tamarindo Estuary. This tour offers a unique opportunity to observe the abundant wildlife of the tropical dry forest, while learning about the unique ecosystem of the mangrove forest. Gliding along the estuary in a covered boat, you’ll see crocodiles, iguanas, and many species of wading birds. Halfway through the tour you will get the chance to get off the boat and into the national park, where you can see howler monkeys and other exotic animals with your guide.

After the tour, you can grab lunch and head to your surf lesson. Today, the Iguana Surf crew will take a video of your lesson so they can evaluate your performance with you the following day. This is so they can show you your current technique, allowing you to improve throughout the week. After your lesson, you can get a jump on those sunset drinkies.

Day 4:

Today your surf lesson takes place at 8 a.m. After that, you will be shown your video from the previous day and an Iguana Surf instructor will help you improve your techniques with an in-depth analysis of your surf skills and what you can improve.

After this lesson, it may be a good time for a nap! If napping isn’t your thing, you can get in some shopping at the many nearby souvenir and surf shops. Perhaps you’ll buy a new bathing suit for your sunset catamaran tour. There is a shop just down the street that sells bikinis designed in Tamarindo!

At 1 p.m. you will embark on your sunset cruise, where you will take a relaxing sunset sail from Tamarindo to a hidden beach. Enjoy the open bar while you scan the seas for dolphins, sea turtles, leaping mantas, or even whales. The boat will stop in a quiet bay, allowing you to snorkel or hang out on the deserted beach while the crew prepares a lunch buffet by an open flame. Back on board, the boat will head back towards Tamarindo while sunset reflects off the mighty Pacific. The waves will lull you into a tranquil frame of mind, setting you up for a great night’s sleep for your big adventure tomorrow!

Day 5:

Today is the big day! You will depart at 6:30 a.m. for the Adventure Combo Tour in Rincon De La Vieja National Park. This adrenaline-fueled day includes an eight-cable zipline over the canyon below where you will then rappel down the canyon wall and rock climb back up. Next, you will make your way down to the river to start your white-water adventure. The day ends with a relaxing volcanic mud body mask and dip in the hot springs where you can unwind after a full day of adventure.

Day 6:

It’s time for your surf trip to nearby Avellanas Beach to test your skills on some different types of waves. You will get on the shuttle at 7 a.m. after a fresh breakfast and head out to try your luck on a new break. This surf lesson is fundamental because it will help you take your skills to the next level as you experience surfing different breaks.

After the surf trip, you have a free day. Maybe you’ll want to take advantage of the unlimited surfboard rentals and head out onto the mellow waves of Tamarindo Beach on your own or with your fellow campers. Maybe you’ll want to try snorkeling, or just lay on the beach, the choice is yours!

Day 7:

It’s your last full day to surf and it’s photo day, so be sure to make the most of your time on the water. By now, you’ve gained some experience and want to have evidence of all you’ve accomplished. That’s why we offer a photo shoot on your last day of surf lessons so you can come home with great memories and beautiful shots of your surfing experience. Today, the tides have you starting at 8 a.m. so you’ll be done with your lesson by 10. Now you have the rest of the day to surf, shop for last-minute souvenirs, and take in all the beach town vibes Tamarindo has to offer. Make sure you don’t get too much sun, though. It’s Friday night and the bars will be bumping! With fire shows and live music, the beach will be alight with festivities.

Day 8:

It’s check-out day, but if you manage to wake up early enough you can still get a last surf before the shuttle takes you back to the airport. Shower up, finish packing, and get ready to head home after spending a perfect week at one of the best surf resorts in Costa Rica!
