Urban hotel Verso in Jyväskylä

Due to some family issues we ended up taking an ex-tempore two-night stay in Jyväskylä. We took off on a couple of days’ notice, so I booked a Hotel through booking.com and managed to get a pretty good deal.

Modern hotel on historic premises

On Sunday we drove to Central Finland and stopped at my dad’s for some afternoon coffee and a catch-up. Then we headed to Jyväskylä and the hotel. Hotel Verso is the second hotel opened in Jyväskylä by the entrepreneurs of the renowned Boutique Hotel Yöpuu, Ari Pärnänen and Katriina Pilppula. Verso is a modern urban hotel with 128-rooms in the heart of the city. The hotel was opened in June 2016 after a renovation of the premises that had hosted Hotel Jyväshovi for 78 years.

Nice pub grub

The hotel was nice enough and the room was cozy. However, the fact that the room, as well as the breakfast room, reception, bar, and restaurant didn’t have any windows facing outdoors (the windows faced to an indoor courtyard) made it seem a bit gloomy. The room had a bathtub, which my readers know I love. The bed was comfortable and provided a good night’s sleep. The positive side of now windows facing the street was that the room was also really quiet. On the first night, we opted for some pub grub and ate at Revolution. Hubby ordered chicken wings and I opted for three starters: fried scampi, deep-fried halloumi, and fries with aioli that we shared. The food was actually quite good for pub grub.

Beautiful breakfast and perfect risotto

Come Monday morning we got to test the hotel breakfast and were pleasantly surprised. The selection wasn’t huge but of good quality. They served freshly baked bread, which is always a big plus. In addition, you could get eggs and omelets to order. We both ordered an omelet which was delivered to our table within a couple of minutes. As we both had to work on Monday, we pretty much spent the day in our room working. We did pop to the Espresso House next door to buy some lunch and I did go out for some shopping after my working day was done. On Monday evening, we dined at the hotel restaurant. As it was a cold day, we both had a warming chanterelle soup with vermouth and chives to start. Hubby’s main was toast Skagen and I opted for a lemon-saffron risotto with scampi and rocket. The food surprised us positively and the risotto was among the best I’ve ever had in a restaurant.

Tuesday morning started out with another hotel breakfast and this time I ordered two eggs sunny side up. They also arrived quickly and were fried to perfection. After working for a few hours, we hit the road and drove back home. I can recommend both the hotel and its restaurant to anyone visiting Jyväskylä. This visit also left me thinking that we need to try out Hotel Yöpuu one of these days as it is said to be even better than Verso.
