History

Unlike, other museums of India such as Salar Jung Museum and Indian Museum, Bihar Museum do not have a great History. The museum was established on 15 August 2015. This museum was planned to be a history museum for Bihar.

In July 2011, the government signed the memorandum of understanding with Canada based Consultancy.  The budget for making this great museum at that time was Rs. 498 Crore. This project was given to Japan’s Maki & Associates along with Mumbai’s Opolis Architects. In January 2012, the State Cabinet gave approval to the selection of Japan’s Maki and Associates along with its Indian Partner.

The architecture of Bihar Museum

Bihar Museum is a beautiful six-story building spread over 5.6 hectares, having 24,000 square meters of built area. The Museum has a large excellently landscaped exterior with grasses everywhere, beautiful flower plants and big coconut and other trees. This museum’s exterior is amazing.

This building is beautiful from outside as well as inside.

The architecture of this museum includes galleries, educational and administrative areas, and a lobby. The design of this museum was inspired by the Japanese concept of Oku. The building is very safe as the construction does not include tall buildings. Also, to increase the strength of the building of the museum, the COR-TEN plates were used. The structure has a children’s Gallery, an orientation gallery, three history galleries, a visible gallery, and an art gallery.

The building has several terraces and courtyards that connect indoor and outdoor spaces.

The museum area includes four large sub-areas. These four are –

  1. Waterfall / Jal Angan – This is the central terrace which joins the main museum
  2. Peepal Court – This is a triangular courtyard just across the waterfall courtyard.
  3. Amphitheater – It is basically an open area theatre for plays, events, and performances and can accommodate 200 people and is located near the entrance.
  4. Niranjana Courtyard – Named after Niranjana river, this is the last courtyard. It has a channel of water flowing underneath a bridge that connects one of the History Galleries and the visible storage gallery.

This museum also includes a cafeteria. Here you can relax and eat. The food at the cafeteria is good.
