Triund Trek, McLeodganj- A Moderate Trek

Triund is the pride of Dharamshala, situated in the laps of Dhauladhar range. Seriously, if u don’t complete this Triund Trek of 4-5 hours, Your trip to McLeodganj is incomplete.

We, a group of 7 friends planned to visit Triund in June last year.  We got on the bus at 11 PM from Chandigarh and reached Dharamshala Bus stand at 6 in the morning.

HOW TO REACH MCLEODGANJ FROM DHARAMSHALA

There are 3 ways to reach McLeodganj from Dharamshala-

  1. Take a local bus from Dharamshala bus stand to mcleodganj bus stand. Its fare ranges from Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 per person.
  2. Take a taxi on a sharing basis. They will charge you Rs. 40 per person and will start the journey only when their car fills up.
  3. Take a personal taxi, they will charge you around Rs. 800.

We took a sharing basis taxi from Dharamshala bus stand. He dropped us at McLeodganj bus stand and from there we went to our hotel walking.

After resting for a while, we went out for local sightseeing. It included bhagsu falls, nechung monastery, and St. Johns Church.

In the evening, we went to a Café named- The Black Magic. It is an amazing place for party animals. We were lucky enough to witness a local band performing there live for us.

Next day, before starting the trek, we need tents and sleeping bags. There are many agents in Mcleodganj who can give you a sleeping bag and tent on rent. Make sure you ask them all and take the cheapest deal. Our agent took 500 each for sleeping bag and tent.  Drop a comment here and I will tell you which travel agency will give you the best deal.

ROUTES TO TRIUND TREK

  1. McLeodganj-Dharmkaot-Gallu Temple-Triund
  2. McLeodganj-Bhagsu village-Triund
  3. McLeodganj-Naddi-Triund

We took the first route as the track of this route is comparatively fine. At around 11 am we took a taxi from McLeodganj to Gallu temple. Gallu temple is the last spot till where motorable vehicles can go. One can also walk from McLeodganj to Gallu temple which is approximately 4-5 km. Gallu temple is the base from where the Triund Trek starts. There is a checkpoint. You need to do an entry there before crossing the check-post. A bit of advice, you are not allowed to take any alcoholic substances or Bluetooth speakers on Triund trek.

We started our trek at 12:30 PM. Initially, the stretch of the trek was easy. It was a kachha road full of small stones. We started our hiking with full energy and strolled with peace, laughing and singing and enjoying to the fullest. Little did we know what was in store for us. It was peaceful and very close to nature. While progressing on our way to Triund, we witnessed some amazing views.

Magical View from a tea shop

The next stretch of the Triund trek was tougher. The path became steeper and narrower. The altitude getting high, it was also getting cold. After some time we were exhausted and decided to take some rest at a tea shop. There we had chai and Maggi. It was not an ordinary tea shop as the view from there was magical. While taking the sip of chai and eating Maggi, we were enjoying this magnificent view.  We got even more excited to reach the top after this view.

After taking rest, it became even more difficult to trek. Our rest breaks were more than our walking time. The trek became toughest now. The last 1 km of the trek is toughest as it is full of large rocks and huge rocky stairs.

Finally, after all the efforts, we reached the campsite. The 5-6 hours of the exhausting trek, it was totally worth it. Our tents were already ready. We reached there at around 5 in the evening.  We were hungry so we asked the nearby shopkeeper about dinner. He gave us a few options and we chose dal chawal from it.

While our dinner was getting prepared we sat around our camp and interacted with fellow travelers. All of them were sharing their traveling stories. It was fun. After eating our dinner, we slept in our tents as it was very cold outside.

The morning view was flawless. We ordered Maggi and aloo paranthas for breakfast and soaked in the morning view from some time.

After that, we packed our stuff and started our descend. On our way back, we went to Shiva Café, Mcleodganj. It is one hell of a place.
