Review of Woody’s Serious Food, in Chincoteague, VA

After a long day on the beach and hours under the sun, you might come off of Chincoteague beach wondering where is the best place to eat. Despite McDonald’s being the first restaurant, you pass on your way off the island we encourage you to keep going. Head down Maddox Blvd to some amazing barbecue at Woody’s Serious Food, also known as Woody’s right after the circle. You know you have arrived when you come to the VW bus parked in the grass on the left. Woody’s is a seasonal operation in Chincoteague that allows the locals and natives to enjoy great barbecue and homemade meals. What is on the menu at Woody’s? Woody’s offers many different BBQ types of meat and sandwiches along with some great side dishes. On our first visit to Woody’s, we ordered a meat platter of half a chicken to share between the two of us with beans and coleslaw for our side. Considering Peter only likes white meat and I like dark, the price was right for the shared meal. On our second visit, I ordered chicken again while Peter ordered Woody’s Signature, a Pulled Pork Sandwich with red sauce. Review of Woody’s Barbecue The chicken on the first day was absolutely the best we have probably had, I think this is why I ordered it the second time. However, we realized that the expectations from our first visit were all in the cook that day. As with any restaurant you visit you will find some days the food is delicious and wishing you could order a second plate and others you wish you ordered something different. While disappointed the second time around on the chicken platter, I would still order it a third time. (Hey I know what I like!) However, the pulled pork sandwich that Peter got was absolutely delicious and I wouldn’t mind trying it again. The sides come in small plastic containers that I wish we had saved because I hate putting more plastic out in the world, but lesson learned for the next visit. Otherwise, the sides were good, but nothing to write home about. What is their popular dish? After talking to a few people who visit the island every year, their signature or known dish is actually the corn nuggets and the yum yum sauce. However, we did not try them so we can’t give an opinion on them. But if you have ever tried them, let us know your thoughts! Where is there to sit? Woody’s has a few different places to sit or stand for patrons to eat. If you want to get out of the sun, there are 3 small tables under the porch by the order line you can grab. Otherwise, the only other area to sit is across the parking lot at one of the few picnic benches available. But if you are in a hurry or don’t want to wait, then you can grab one of the tables out front and stand under an umbrella while enjoying your food. These tables are high tops and at my 5’3″ stature I found them to be slightly difficult to eat at while standing. Conclusion We love barbecue, so there is no doubt we will be back. Despite some inconsistency, they never disappointed us in their flavor and food options.
