The Newport Transporter Bridge.

We were looking for something different to do on a weekend trip to Wales that we could do as a family and would fill a gap in our schedule. With a quick search online we stumbled across the Transporter Bridge in Newport.

It may not match the scale and iconic status of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Still, this unique piece of engineering heritage is one of only six remaining around the world. This is the largest one left.

Workers used the bridge to cross the river with it having been built as a cheaper alternative to running a ferry service or building a regular bridge that would have needed to be tall enough to allow ships to pass. The gondola would take them across the river in less than one minute leaving the channel free clear for ships.

It’s a climb of almost 300 steep steps to the top with a great view of the surrounding area when you get there.

We only spent around an hour here, but it was a good little side trip and one of the cheapest attractions we have been to at £4 for adults and £3 for children. It is closed from October to April, so we managed to visit just before the end of the season.

Volunteers staff a small centre with funds raised from the sale of souvenirs going towards the maintenance of the bridge. It is a unique piece of history that’s worth a visit.

The visitor centre is located on Brunel Street, Newport, South Wales NP20 2JY. Parking is available on both sides of the river and there is a cafe nearby serving meals, snacks and drinks.
