Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway in North Devon

A once fairly common sight around the UK and other countries were the Cliffside railways that would ferry passengers and freight up and down the steep cliff sides at beachside resorts. Nowadays few of these remain, so when we came across this one that connects Lynton and Lynmouth we thought that it was worth a trip, besides which we had left the car up at the top in Lynton and didn’t fancy the trek back up the hillside.

UK’s only water-powered railway

This is the only fully water-powered railway in the UK and one of only three in the world all of which were built in the late 1800’s, so that goes to show how good engineering was back then.

As it needs no power to operate and only uses a small amount of water from the nearby river it’s an extremely eco-friendly way to travel.

An act of parliament in 1888 allows the operators of the train to extract water from the West Lyn River which is roughly a mile away, with the water not being altered or treated in any way it is then discharged back into the ocean after use, even the hydraulic braking system uses water instead of oil and this system was designed and patented by the engineers for this railway.

This is one of the most environmentally friendly tourist attractions in the country and effectively has zero emissions.

Although the ride doesn’t take long the views are awesome and when you get to the top there is a cafe with a view, unfortunately, it was closed when we got there so no coffee break for us
