African Style Forever

For 2019, getting to Africa is at the top of my travel list! I’ve been wanting to go for ages. In addition to learning more about my ancestors and understanding our history, Africa is full of culture, nature, delicious food and fashion and I plan on experiencing all of it! My goal is to hit Senegal, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana before the end of 2019. African attire is absolutely stunning and I’ve been trying to incorporate it more into my outfits. Here are a few pieces I’ve been trying to add to my wardrobe:

1. Head Wraps

Traditionally used in harsh, dry climates to protect the hair and the scalp from the sweltering heat and natural elements, the head wrap has, overtime, turned into an evergreen fashion accessory that can be paired with any outfit. Whether you’re going for a bohemian flair with high-rise, flared jeans and a blouse, or an off-shoulder dashiki dress – a printed, or simple head wrap will perfect the look.

2. Kente Palazzo Pants

I’m obsessed with Kente Palazzo Pants. The Kente cloth is home to the Ashanti Kingdom and is recognizable by its intricate patterns and bright colours. This cotton or silk fabric makes for the ideal palazzo fabric choice and a unique style to match.

3. African Skirt

It’s so easy to dress up or down with an African Skirt and, if you’re not opting for the pencil-skirt, extremely comfortable to wear. An African skirt can really brighten up your winter days with a splash of boldly printed colors and patterns, and coquettish cuts.

4. Statement Sleeves

Why wear an ordinarily-sleeved top when you can wow your date with a statement-sleeved top that’ll jazz up any outfit? Tops with bell-sleeves and off-the-shoulder cuts have become a staple in African fashion and it is hardly difficult to see why. Tops, blouses and dresses featuring playfully designed sleeves can elevate an outfit without much effort.

5. Ankara Blazer

You don’t need to be a business woman to own an Ankara print blazer – every fashion-savvy lady out there knows it is an all-occasions-kind-of-piece. In fact, it is the perfect garment to keep in your car for emergencies: throw an Ankara blazer of a t-shirt and a pair of jeans when you can’t make it home before an important business dinner and you’re good to go.

6. Natural Accessories & Embellishments

Cowrie, bauxite stone beads, shells, brass beads – Africans have adorned themselves with the beauty of nature for centuries, and it is a tradition that continues. To really bring your ensemble together, be sure to include clothing items embellished with natural beads, stones and shells. Go all out with colourful, beaded earrings, delicate shell necklaces and wooden bangles for that extra touch of African spirit.
