Thinking of Becoming An Engineer?

This is a collaborative post.

With movies like Black Panther putting a black woman as the driving force behind technology and Engineering, STEM is a diverse career path option in which you can constantly grow. If you’re thinking of becoming an engineer, here are a few things to get you started on the right path.

1. Do Your Research.

It is incredibly important when you want to start thinking about your career that you do enough research into your chosen subject and make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into. When it comes to engineering there are a ton of different areas you can go into and specialise in. It is an incredibly diverse career path and could end up working in any of these areas:

Aeronautical/aerospace
Agricultural
Architectural
Bioengineering
Chemical
Civil
Computer
Construction
Electrical
Environmental
Industrial
Manufacturing
Marine, navel and ocean
Materials
Mechanical
Metallurgical and mining
Nuclear engineering

2. Talk To Other Female Engineers.

Engineering is a big decision so you need to make sure that you take the time to speak to someone who is already working in the field. The only way you will get to know what it is really like to work in this field is by talking to someone who does. They will be able to tell you about the work which goes into engineering and give you some helpful hints on things you need to do to get ahead of the game. They could point you in the direction of an mba with engineering focus, and then help you work out how to specialise into a specific area.

3. Finding And Applying For A Course.

The thing you need to bear in mind here is that engineering requires a lot of education and it needs skill in the areas of both science and maths. If you want to find a course you need to start doing your research at school. Start off by checking for career days at your school and read up on the job in the library. Talk to the careers adviser at school and tell them about what you want to do.

Start to research engineers in your local area and collect their names, email addresses and collect them so you can start asking for work experience and advice.you can also check on google and see what engineering firms are close to where you live and ring them asking if they could give you some advice on becoming an engineer.

It will take you some time to find the right college to study at for your course- and make sure that you find out which college is the best one for the type of engineering you want to go into. Get applying, be honest in your interviews and then you can start studying for the career you’ve always wanted to do.

It will be a long process to become an engineer so make sure that you know which area you want to do, be dedicated to the job and you will end up working in a career which is diverse, challenging and always interesting.
