To become good with boxing or Muay Thai you’ll need 3 things: discipline, stamina – and a good pair of boxing gloves.
The first two will improve as your training progresses, but the third item requires a carefully planned investment.
But what defines a good boxing glove? Well in my opinion, a good pair should provide proper protection for your knuckles and wrists. In addition, it should be manufactured using such high quality standards that it will last for many years. But usually the latter is an issue. You can’t simply look at some new gloves and know how they will look several years down the road.
So to properly address the quality topic I will not review a new pair of gloves. Instead, I will examine a pair that I have used for the last 3 years – my Twins boxing gloves – to see how well they kept up.
Let’s dive right in!
Twins Boxing Gloves Review
My Twins gloves were manufactured in Thailand by a company called Twins Special Co. LTD. The company has been around for a while and have manufactured and sold fitness products for over 60 years. It’s one of the most trusted brands in the fitness industry.
I bought my Twins gloves back in October 2014, and since then I have used them about 2 to 6 times per week. Mostly for Muay Thai and boxing practice. As far as my training goes, it consists of pretty much everything: focus mitts, heavy bag work, sparring etc. In particular I use the heavy bag a lot.
Design And Comfort
One reason why I bought the Twins 10 oz glove was because they fit my hand very well. They are comfortable, snug and offers very good hand protection, as well as being easy to put on and take off. They can be used for either boxing or Muay Thai, and are great for both bag work and focus mitts.
The Twins gloves are sold with many design options. You have the choice between real leather (which I have) or synthetic leather. In addition they come in many different colors and patterns. In my opinion it’s a cool looking glove!
I think my Twins 10 oz gloves are especially good for the heavy bag and the focus mitts. The padding is just right to give that heavy punch and weight I like, while at the same time provide me with proper knuckle protection. However, the padding on a 10 oz glove does not provide enough protection for a sparring partner, where 16 oz gloves is the usual standard.
So does the padding still offer good protection after 3 years of heavy use? Yes it still does the job, but of course not as excellent as when they were new. The padding has wore off a bit especially around the index finger knuckle, but still offers enough protection. I see no need to buy a new pair of gloves anytime soon.
In my opinion, wrist support is the most important criterion. I have an old wrist injury and sometimes during training I get pain in the area where my pinky bone attaches to the wrist joint. Therefore I need good wrist protection, and that was another reason why I bought the Twins 10 oz. They offers one of the best wrist protections on the market.
So how have the wrist protection fared after 3 years of heavy use? Good I must say. The Velcro is as good as new and the leather is still snug and firm. Impressive!
I don’t have a good name for this category, but if you ever smelled the inside of an old glove you know what I am talking about. And I have to confess. I haven’t really taken great care of my Twins gloves. But there are many ways to address the bad smell, for example using a glove deodorizer or an air dryer.
So does my Twins gloves smell bad? Well they smell a little. But one month ago I used an air dryer at my gym and it made the smell pretty much disappear. Thus I don’t think it’s mold. In my opinion, they smell less compared to other gloves the same age, and this is not something that bothers me too much.
I must say I am very happy with how my Twins 10 oz gloves have kept up these 3 years. There’s not much to complain about, perhaps maybe the padding around the knuckles. But I must say that my trusted gloves have aged very well. Hence I have no plans to buy new gloves anytime soon.
