Our pursuit for the ultimate romantic weekend escape from Cape Town continues..
This month was extra special – being our 4 year wedding anniversary – so we decided to search for a weekend getaway that was quiet, peaceful and all things romantic. A Farm Stay in the Robertson Wine Valley was just that.
Welcome to
Jan Harmsgat Country House
JHG Farm has more historic charm and old country tradition than any other farm we’ve visited thus far in the Western Cape. It was founded in 1723, keeping their now 5 star guest accommodation and restaurant within their old original quarters.
We arrived on Friday evening, just in time to watch the sun setting over their 680 hectares of Langeberg Mountain views and working farm lands.
The Honeymoon Suite
Oh goodness, this room is what #themarriedwanderers dreams are made of.
A hand carved vintage bed placed two metres away from a free standing candle lit tub, all adorned by exposed thatch walls. The thatch filling the room with that warm and welcoming scent of our beloved bushveld.
The Executive Suite’s warm chandelier lighting creates such a dreamy atmosphere that for us, set the tone for the entire weekend.
A Pomegranate Paradise
Mitch, the farm’s fantastic and hospitable wine manager, took us on a safari drive through the pomegranate orchards. JHG is famous (or should be famous) for owning the largest pomegranate farm in Southern Africa. They produce and sell a pure pomegranate juice that we tucked in to all weekend.
Oh, but this sunset
As the light began to move closer towards the mountains, we continued further up the property – with sightings of resident wildebeest, springbuck and ostrich.
Mitch parked at the top of the hill and poured us what seemed to be a never ending glass of his personal passion on the farm – the JHG wines.

The joy of doing nothing
When staying at a villa, farm or guest house – we love making time to just do nothing. Then we can do what we really feel like doing in the moment, rather than jam packing the day fill of activities and coming home feeling exhausted.
A farm stay is the perfect time to slow down, so we spent the rest of our stay doing a mixture of
floating,
exploring the farm,
And indulging at their Just Amy restaurant..
Where is the Jan Harmsgat Farm
Just a 2 hour drive outside of Cape Town, JHG farm is tucked away just outside the Robertson Wine Valley, close to Bonnievale. You will find it just off the N2, along the R60 Highway (enroute to the Garden Route).
*If we were really searching to find a “con” – it would be that the accommodation is relatively close to the main road (which means you can hear the cars driving by). However the pros, including the service from the staff, the 360 views and the little decadent chocolates that they leave every night by the bed are far more overwhelming!
What to do in the area
JHG Farm is on the doorstep of all the Robertson Wine Farms and experiences. We didn’t have the time to explore them all, but we did get the opportunity to visit Zandvliet Wine Estate.
