For anyone interesting in birdwatching – Mannar peninsula in the North-West of Sri Lanka is a must visit destination on any trip itinerary. The drive from Colombo is a bit of a long one – around 7 hours so we recommend that you do a stop in Wilpattu where you can do some safaris to see some wildlife as well. From Wilpattu it is a nice 3 hour drive to Mannar and you can get there by mid morning and do some bird watching along the way specially at Giant’s Tank close to Mannar.
During the migrant months from November to April – Mannar comes to life with millions of migrating waders and ducks that escape the northern winter and come to this tropical paradise. One of the highlights of the Mannar are the large flocks of Greater Flamingos that gather along the causeway to feed throughout the day.
One can spend the whole day visiting all the water bodies around the Mannar area to get all your migrant waders added to your birdlist and also some rare residents like the Spot-billed Duck and the elusive Indian Courser.
