Why Patagonia Should Be On Your Bucket List

Making a list of must-visit locations? Patagonia, the land of legend and lore, is definitely worth putting at the top of that bucket list. Located in the southern-most region of South America, Patagonia is spread across Argentina and Chile. Featuring breath-taking granite mountains, mighty glaciers and pristine blue-green lakes, this land is bound to make your jaw drop in awe of its stunning power and beauty.

Here is a list of must-visit places in this wondrous destination.

Exploring the Torres Del Paine

Love to hike? All you have to do is walk out of any village or town, to find yourself encircled by mesmerising surroundings that provide endless opportunities for adventures. However, the best hiking spot in the Chilean portion of Patagonia is the Torres del Paine National Park. The most popular trail in the park is the W, named after the shape of the trail, which weaves in and out of vast valleys. Trek through the trail and get as close as possible to mountains and glaciers. The main highlights of the W trail are the Grey Glacier, the granite Torres del Paine peaks and Valle Frances. Get up close with the Chilean wildlife such as condors and guanacos while on the Fauna Trail and during the visit to the prehistoric Milodon Cave.

Walking on the Viedma Glacier

Glacier hiking is one of the most popular reasons why Patagonia should be on your bucket list. Grab a harness, strap on the crampons, pick up your ice axe and follow the guide, as you make your way up the edge of the Viedma glacier. This glacier is snuggled amidst deep-blue pinnacles and crevasses. Celebrate your climb up the glacier with a drink of Baileys or scotch with a few cubes of the purest ice you will set eyes on.

Whale watching in the Peninsula

On the Argentinian side of Patagonia lies the main sight of Peninsula Valdes, a must for every wildlife enthusiast. Between the months of May and November, the Puerto Madryn coastal area turns into a breeding ground for the Southern Right whales. The beautiful magnificent creatures are easily viewable, along with orcas that travel these waters. These sea creatures get close to the shores to hunt for seals and sea lions on the beach, which is a life-changing experience to witness.

Visiting Perito Moreno

A visit to Perito Moreno is a must while in Patagonia. Watch the chunks of endless blue ice fall into the stagnant lake waters below. This is a moving experience that creates a powerful feeling within, while showcasing nature at its resilient and mighty best. Perito Moreno is one of the last standing ice fields that have withstood global warming, which in turn is making the glacier advance instead of retreat. Get close to this massive glacier by walking on it, sailing across the lake, or by just watching it from numerous viewing platforms.

Patagonia is a haven for adventurers. A popular saying goes as follows: “El que se apura en la Patagonia, pierde su tiempo”, which basically means ‘you can’t rush your time when in Patagonia’. Imagine getting lost in the wilds of this unforgettable destination that has an extensive stretch of diverse geography, unique wildlife and a variety of climatic conditions – adding to the many reasons why it should be on your bucket list!
