So you planned a family trip to Las Vegas but wondering how to get around las vegas? Worry not! Las Vegas has an efficient public transportation system. With convenient cabs, affordable buses, a well-organized monorail, classy limousines, and pedestrian-friendly streets, Las Vegas is easy to get around with kids.

Las Vegas Airport Transfers

From public buses to inter-city shuttles to private taxis to stylish limousines to rental cars – getting to and from Las Vegas Airport (McCarran) is fast, reliable, and comfortable.

Terminal 1 is for arrivals and Terminal 3 is for departures. The transportation system is logically lined on both the terminals.

You can use McCarran tram and Inter-Terminal shuttles to travel between the terminals.

Head to McCarran Rent-A-Car center at 7135 Gilespie Street if you are planning to rent a car.

To ride the transportation, head to level zero (below the baggage pick up) at Terminal 1. WAX (Westcliff Airport Express) takes you to the Strip (stops at New York New York) and downtown. If you have a Medicare card, the ticket costs $1, or else pay a regular fare of $2. The bus runs every 20 to 30 minutes from 6 am to 11 pm every day.

You can also hire a Limousine from the airport to the strip or the other way around. It comes quite cheap if you’re traveling as a group. Kids will love the Limousine experience

Getting Around Las Vegas

Walking

If you plan to walk the entire length of the Las Vegas Strip with kids, I adore you. We did.

Just remember to pack a light backpack and lots of water. Walking, in our opinion, is the best way to explore any city.

Starting from the famous Neon Sign making way down the sidewalks of the strip, stopping by for performances and activities, it’s exhausting yet rewarding to walk the strip.

However, if walking the strip is too much a thing to think about, there are a lot of Las Vegas transportation options to get you around on and off the strip.

Las Vegas Monorail

With 7 stops (MGM Grand, Bally’s | Paris, Harrah’s | The LINQ, Westgate Las Vegas, Flamingo | Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas Convention Center, and the SLS Las Vegas), Las Vegas Monorail is quite efficient to get you from point A to B on the strip. In fact, it’s the best way to get around Vegas. You can opt for a single ride Pass ($5), one day pass ($13), two-day pass ($23), three-day pass ($29), four-day pass ($36), five-day pass ($43), and a one-week pass ($56). Kids five and under travel for free.

The rail runs from 7 am to midnight on Mondays, 7 am to 2 am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and 7 am to 3 am on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Shuttles

If your resort doesn’t have monorail access, some of the Las Vegas hotels offer free shuttles to the nearest monorail stop. Make sure to check with your hotel.

The purple bus starts at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and runs every hour from 10:00 am and 7:00 pm, stopping at other resorts on the strip.

Off Strip Boyd Gaming, Rio, and Sam’s Town also offer complimentary shuttles.

Complimentary (Free) Trams

The free trams are run by individual properties to make travel easier for their guests.

  • Mandalay Bay – Excalibur Tram

This tram connects the Mandalay Bay, the Excalibur, and the Luxor with a stop at each of them. The Express Tram with no stop at Luxor is also available. The tram runs from 11 am to 10:30 pm from Monday to Friday and from 11 am to 12:30 am on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Bellagio – CityCenter – Monte Carlo Tram

Aka Aria express, this tram stops at a station between Aria and the Monte-Carlo, at the Crystal shopping mall, and at a station between the Vdara and the Bellagio. The tram runs from 8 am to 4 am every day.

  • Mirage – Treasure Island Tram

This tram takes you from the Mirage to the Treasure Island. It runs from 9 am to 1 am from Mondays through Thursdays and from 11 am to 2 am on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Buses

The Deuce and SDX buses are an amazing way to sightsee as well as get around Las Vegas. Well, economical too.

The red double-decker buses (Deuce) run 24X7 every 15 to 20 minutes from Downtown (Freemont Street Experience) to Mandalay Bay (South Strip Transfer Center) and stop at nearly every resort and hotel on the route. You must check the route schedule and understand if you’re boarding a southbound or northbound bus.

You can catch the SDX (Strip & Downtown Express) that runs from 9 am to midnight every 15 to 20 minutes is a great option if you’re in a rush and need a quick ride as it makes selected stops.

You can buy a 2-hour pass ($6), a 24-hour pass (8), or a 3-day pass ($20). Children five and under ride for free. You can buy a ticket on-board, through the rideRTC transit app, or via ticket vending machine. Make sure you have the exact change.

Taxis

Taxi or cab is also an option in Las Vegas provided you are ready to make a beeline and wait for your turn. Yes, you can’t flag down a cab on the busy strip. So, you can either call for a cab and wait at the designated location or wait in the taxi line. All the hotels and venues have taxi lines.

Uber and Lyft

Las Vegas also has Uber and Lyft.

The fares largely depend upon where you’re going, time spent in the cab, and rush hours (surge fare).

Driving

It’s best to get around Las Vegas without a car but if you’ve lined up one or more day trips from Las Vegas, it’s best to rent a car in Las Vegas. Driving on the strip is a bit of jostling but parking comes free at most of the resorts and casinos. You can choose to self-park though all the big hotels offer valet parking. Tipping is recommended.
