Sky life

One of my favourite movies is that George Clooney classic, Up in the Air. George plays Ryan Bingham, a frequent flyer with millions of miles under his belt. As he says, “Last year I spent 322 days on the Road, which means I had to spend 43 miserable days at home.”

Living in hotels, airport terminals, and yes, up in the air, demands certain skills and equipment. If you are going to thrive rather than merely survive, that is. There’s a friction about travel. The queues, the delays, the check-ins, the routines, the eternal hassling with clerks and taxi drivers.

Laura Gassner Otting writes on Medium about her particular set of equipment and tactics that help her spend so much of her life on the road. It’s not all glamour and champagne. Sometimes it’s just about getting some sleep in a brightly-lit environment. Take it from me, this sort of detailed advice from someone who knows what they are talking about is gold. And diamonds.

She’s got a big list of gear to check out, and it’s all affiliate-linked. You could do worse than come back here when you’re done and click on my link for Up in the Air before you actually buy anything. Just sayin’.

Friends gape in wonder when they keep tally of my volume of travel. (Mostly it’s because I chose not to share those fetal position moments in Patagonia and cold lonely nights in Oak Ridge as readily on social media.) But, here’s the thing: traveling is far easier when you do it all the time than when you do it sporadically. Why? Because one develops hacks and finds products that make the road feel like home.
