Lake Tahoe, in the spectacular Sierra Nevada Mountains plonked on the border of Nevada and California, is popular for its clear waters that brim with a striking cobalt blue color. This alpine Lake set amidst the white snowy Sierra Nevada mountain ranges has but naturally been a choice of many moviemakers for their shooting location. The Godfather Part II:

Sequel to the legendary movie, The Godfather, The Godfather II won equal acclaim. The house where the central characters of the movie, the Corleone family, lived, was set up in the California side of Lake Tahoe.The Fleur de lac estate which was used as the house is a private property and entry is restricted. But the structures that were used in the movie like the boat houses and condominiums can be easily seen from Lake Tahoe. Centered on a world of mafia and handling extreme emotions like violence and dreams, the movie went on to win several academy awards for various categories.

Rose-Marie:

This 1936 musical film directed by W.S. Van Dyke, is the first sound film version of Rudolph Friml operetta that was released in 1924. The parts of the film that are shown to be Canada were actually shot in Lake Tahoe area. This idea was very innovative for the time. The movie also holds the distinction of being one of the first musicals to feature scenes in a natural setting with a lot of effort going in to transport equipment to the location.

The Bodyguard:

Another movie that had Lake Tahoe locations and was quite a hit at the box office in 1992 was ‘The Bodyguard’. The movie was a romantic thriller and was nominated for several MTV awards and also won the Grammy Award for categories like Album of the Year, Record of the Year with the best pop vocal performance going to singer Whitney Houston who also debuted as an actor in the movie. A lovely lakefront cabin in South Lake Tahoe was used in the movie.

City of Angels:

The lakefront cabin in South Lake Tahoe called Fallen Leaf Lakefront appeared both in ‘The Bodyguard’ and another movie called ‘City of Angels’. Featuring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan,this movie also appeared in the nineties.
