Beach side of San Diego

With a coastline running for nearly 70 miles, San Diego in California is bound to have several beaches. Every Beach is a winner with pleasant weather, silver sands and calm waters suited for all seasons. Some of these lovely beaches vouched for by locals and visitors are:

Coronado Beach:

With a compliant weather the whole year through, Coronado Beach is a wide and flat beach. It is perfect for families with mild waves suited for swimming, surfing or boogie boarding. The Coronado Beach holds the distinction of being one of the most romantic beaches and the best family beach in the world. It also enjoyed a piece of stardom as the beach featured in the romantic comedy flick, ‘Some like It Hot’ starring Marilyn Monroe.

Mission Beach:

Mission Beach stretches for about two miles between the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay Channel entrance. A promenade along the beach and the bay allows people to stroll and even bike on it. Activities for fun like a giant roller coaster and beach volleyball and surfing at designated beach areas make the Mission Beach a huge tourist attraction.

La Jolla:

About a mile long sandy beach, La Jolla, is a perfect beach destination for families. It has the Kellogg Park next to it with grassy areas to relax and enjoy a picnic. The gentle waves, especially in summer, makes it perfect to sign up for scuba classes that are conducted here. Surfing is also permitted but in designated areas. Visitors can also visit the nearby Steven Birch Aquarium.

Imperial Beach:

Situated five miles from the USA and Mexico border, Imperial Beach is popular for the US Open Sandcastle Competition held every summer. Besides swimming and surfing, visitors to the beach can take a walking tour of public art or a nature walk in the famous Tijuana Estuary for bird watching.

Pacific Beach:

Fondly called as ‘The Strand’, the Pacific Beach runs for about two miles. Pacific Beach is one of the most visited beaches of San Diego and usually has large crowds. It offers lovely sunset views and is also dotted with many shops and restaurants.

Silver Strand Beach:

One of the most popular beaches for camping, the Silver Strand Beach is between Coronado and Imperial Beach. Tourists can also engage in a host of activities like swimming, kayaking, water skiing, surfing and boating in the sea and beach volleyball on the shores. Campers are facilitated with picnic tables, barbecue pits and fire rings at the beach heightening the camping pleasure.

 

Solana Beach:

Situated in the North Country of San Diego, the Solana Beach is delightful with its hidden coves and lovely cliffs. There are staircases leading to the beach on the cliffs from almost every street corner. The beach is popular for its five hot spots; Seaside, Tide Beach, Seascape Beach, Fletcher Cove and Del Mar Shores.

Ocean Beach:

The Ocean Beach is a pet friendly beach featuring a special run area where dogs can run without a leash. Fishing without permits is also allowed here. Lifeguard stations are an imperative part of the beach as the sea has strong rip currents here making swimming and surfing restricted to designated areas.

Tourmaline Surfing Park Beach:

Tourmaline Surfing Park Beach is another beach on the North Country of San Diego. It is known for the activities of surfing and sailboarding. Surrounded by cliffs that climb up to nearly 75 feet, the beach is in a very scenic place. It has life guards throughout the year. Separate areas are allocated for swimmers and surfers at the beach.

Windansea Beach:

Located in La Jolla, the Windansea Beach attracts experienced surfers and swimmers as it has rocky shores and a hard breaking surf at the shore line. The beach also provides privacy to swimmers and sun bathers as it has large rocks positioned at strategic points around the beach.

Moonlight Beach:

Frequented by North County beach goers, the Moonlight Beach is a state beach in Encinitas, San Diego. It is a favored family getaway as it has a beach volleyball court and surfing opportunities. It also has a large playground on the sandy shores for kids. Snack bars and fine dining options complete this beach holiday destination.
