All about Erode

Erode is a major railway junction and an important city of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Turmeric City as it is the top producer of turmeric in Tamil Nadu. It has many interesting places to visit in and around it. Some of the places to visit in Erode would be:

Thindal Murugan Temple:

One of the main places of worship in Erode is the Thindal Murugan Temple dedicated to Muruga. The temple is located on a hillock at a height of about 50 metres, around six kilometres from the city centre. The temple is believed to be 750 years old and the Rajagopuram does not cease to impress devotees.

Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple:

One among the age old Hindu temples, the Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple, dates back about 1200 years. It was built during the rule of Karikal Chola. The main deities of the temple are God Arudra Kabaliswarar and Goddess Varunambigai. Other deities present are of Mahaganapathy, Saneeswarar and Kalyanasubramanyar. Set in the centre of the city, the temple with its two beautiful Rajagopurams is a highlight of the place.

Government Museum:

Opened for the public in 1987, the Government museum holds exhibits and inscriptions from the era of Kongu Chola reign. Tourists are spellbound by the gallery with an array of handicrafts, artefacts and Bargur stones holding their attention.Separate sections for manuscripts, Tanjore paintings and pre-historic items areadded attractions.

St. Mary’s Church:

An ancient structure of the city of Erode, the St. Mary’s Church was started in 1867 and completed in 1892. The church is an impressive 100 feet monument featuring a holy bell. The complex houses a school. A unique and striking feature of this Catholic Church is the statue of Jesus.

Thanthai Periyar Anna Memorial House:

The house of a freedom fighter and socially active person of Erode, VenkataRamasamy or ThanthaiPeriyar as he is affectionately called by his followers, is now a memorial. The century old house is maintained by the Information and Publicity department. Public can view his photographs and personal belongings exhibited in an orderly manner and get a chance to understand the great visionary that he was.
