The state of sandalwood, Karnataka, has its own share of royalty with many palaces to boast about. A huge part of tourism, these palaces must be visited for their grandeur and history attached to each of them.

Some of Karnataka’s palaces are:

Bangalore Palace:

Set in the heart of the capital, the Bangalore Palace is a trademark of the city. It was built by the Maharaja of Mysore, ChamarajaWodeyar in 1887. Displaying the Tudor style of architecture, the palace is impressive with its many battlements, turreted parapets, arches and fortified towers as well as the exquisitely carved interiors. The palace stands in a massive 45,000 square feet area on 430 acres and is surrounded by a lovely garden making it an ideal setting for exhibitions, cultural programs and concerts.

Mysore Palace:

Also known as Maharaja Palace or Amba Vilas Palace, Mysore Palace was the royal home of the Wodeyars. The palace took around 15 years to be built and was designed by the legendary British architect, Henry Irwin. The palace is palatial and exhibits an Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The entrance is charming as it is through the Doll’s Pavilion or GombeThotti. The palace is the pride of Mysore and tourists line up in queues to see the display of the works of art and beautiful carvings. They are mesmerized by the stained glass roof, wall paintings and the rosewood doors inlaid with ivory besides the opulent golden throne. The palace dons on an ethereal look when it is illuminated on Sundays and all National holidays. The festivity is at the peak during Dasara with processions to Chamundi Hills and other activities beginning at the palace.

Lalitha Mahal Palace:

Built by Raja KrishnarajaWodeyar IV, the LalithaMahal Palace is around 11 kilometres from Mysore at the foot of the Chamundi Hills. It depicts the Renaissance style of architecture designed by Fritchley and resembles St. Paul’s Cathedral of London. Glimpses of the style adapted in the Italina Palazzo and English Manor are also seen in this palace. It now stands as a heritage star hotel with aspects of the palace like the Banquet Hall, Ballroom, Italian marble staircases and the Viceroy room retained.

Jaganmohan Palace:

When the Mysore Palace was being reconstructed after a fire, the royal Wodeyar family shifted temporarily to Jaganmohan Palace which was built in 1861. The palace is a three storied structure with a large, lovely hall that is used to hold cultural programs. Today a large section of it has been converted into an art gallery.

Tipu Sultan’s Palace:

Built by Tipu Sultan in Srirangapatna as his summer retreat, this palace is also called Daria Daulat Bagh. Constructed mainly with teakwood, the palace shows the Indo-Sarcenic style of architecture. It is built on a raised platform with open corridors. A stunning feature of the palace is the colourful frescoes that cover every spare space on the walls, canopies, pillars and arches portraying portraits, battle scenes and floral patterns.
