A visit to the Orange City of India - Nagpur

Orange City, Nagpur wears many crowns. It is the winter capital of our country, the third largest city of Maharashtra, the geographical centre of India and one among the top green cities. The area in and around Nagpur is very green and scenic, and consequently home to many parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Some of the top places to visit in Nagpur are:

Seminary Hill:

Named after St. Charles seminary, the Seminary Hill is around six kilometres from the city centre. The foot hill has a Japanese garden and the hill top, the Satpura Botanical Garden. The trek up the hill is enjoyable with spectacular views of the city all along the way.

Balaji Mandir:

This temple dedicated to Lord Balaji is on Seminary Hill. The temple also has a deity of Lord Karthikeya. Many devotees climb the Seminary Hill solely to visit this temple.

Japanese Rose Garden:

Located at the foot of the Seminary Hill, the Japanese Rose Garden is a treat for sore eyes. The roses planted here sway in a riot of colours among the tall green trees and thick bushes seen everywhere. The iron structures in the rose garden are in an impressive Japanese style.

Maharajbagh Zoo:

Set in the centre of the city, the Maharajbagh Zoo is a great attraction for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. With a botanical and herb garden, the zoo has a pleasant and natural ambience. It also holds some rare animals that cannot be found in any other part of our country. A play area for children makes it a complete family holiday destination.

Sitabuldi Fort:

Set on two hillocks, the Sitabuldi Fort in Nagpur was built by the British. It has a trough around it and a memorial built inside for soldiers who died fighting in the war between the Marathas and the British. The fort is now the Territorial Army office and open to public on national holidays.

Sri Poddareshwar Ram Mandir:

Located in the Central Avenue Road in Nagpur, the temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Shiva. It also has deities of Sita and Lakshmana. Built by Sri Jamnadhar Poddar, the temple is very impressive with marble and sandstone carvings. The temple comes alive during Ramnavami with the ShobhaYatra.

Futala Lake:

Spread over 60 acres, the Fatula Lake is a huge attraction in Nagpur. It is popular for the coloured fountains, illuminated halogen lights and Tanga rides. Surrounded on three sides by forest the lake, it also has a makeshift Chowpatty with lots of restaurants serving the mouth-watering chaatsChowpatty in Mumbai is famous for.
