A day trip to Shivanasamudram

Located around 138 kilometres from Bangalore, Shivanasamudra is actually a hydropower project location but is more popular for its waterfalls. Shivanasamudra literally means ‘Shiva’s sea.’ Set on the banks of the River Kaveri the place attracts tourists for its magnificent waterfall and scenic terrain. Some things not to be missed while on a trip to this beautiful place are:

Visiting Bharachukki and Gaganachukki waterfalls: Shivanasamudra is an island dividing the River Kaveri into two parts. The falls flowing out of these two segments are Bharachukkki and Gaganachukki, both about a kilometre apart.

Bharachukki falls at a height of about 70 metres and flows into several rocky streams that make for a beautiful sight. 200 steps lead to the waterfall with railings to extend support and benches to rest. There are options of going in a coracle to the mouth of the waterfall which is both exciting and breath-taking at the same time. Tourists can stand under a section of the waterfall where the flow is low and enjoy the shower of the cool waters.

Gaganachukki falls is horsetail shaped and falls from a height of about 90 metres. It forms two streams running parallel to each other and then flow down from a height of over 97 metres. The currents triggered by these high waterfalls is quite strong and the gorge runs deep. The hydroelectric power station is set up here.

A watch tower to view the falls is present around 15 kilometres from the falls. They can be viewed from a mosquecalled DargahHazrathMardaneGaib which allows you to see the right branch of the falls.

Fishing and trekking: The flowing waters of River Kaveri are abundant with marine life at the Shivanasamudra Falls. Fishing here can be rewarding as you get to catch some of the best and biggest tropical fishes.

The rocky slopes and green landscape of the area make it viable for treks. Gear up the backpacks with your picnic stuff and work up an appetite with a trek up. Enjoy a picnic meal devouring both the food and the spectacular sights.
