Seneca Caverns, West Virginia

We made a pitstop at Seneca Caverns this past summer while we were in West Virginia visiting my Mom and Step-Dad. This was part of a multi-attraction day as we visited Smoke Hole Caverns, just up the street, before this.

Open to the public since 1930, the 3/4 mile long guided tour lasts about an hour and requires a hard hat (provided). Masks were also required when we went back in August.

Once inside, the tour begins as you start your descent into the caverns which greet you with some pretty neat formations along the entire tour.

You will want to make sure to wear shoes that have traction as the walkway areas can get slick due to the humidity of the caverns. Some areas have handrails and other areas do not so keep that in mind.

Like most caverns, they have an area lit up in multiple colors which makes for a great photograph.

I took so many pictures at this cavern, but I don’t want to spoil it for those that have not been yet, so I will stop here lol. If you are in the eastern part of West Virginia and have the chance, I definitely recommend stopping at Seneca Caverns and checking them out.

Fun Facts About Seneca Caverns

The cave is 4.5 million years old

The inside stays about 54 degrees year-round

Bats only live in the caves to hibernate for the winter and leave in the spring

The first verifiable history of human contact with the cave was in the early 1400s when Seneca Indians used the cave.

Laven Teter rediscovered the cave in 1742 on a quest for water to supply his livestock, it remained in the Teter family until 1928.
