What I am Reviewing

Today I will be reviewing Baresocks 2.0 in a size Large. Let me begin by saying that I have been anxiously awaiting these since they reached out to me back in August. They were still in production at that time, so I knew it would be several months before they were released and shipped out. The wait was worth it. I got them in November, but due to the holidays and my schedule, I just got the chance to try them out on an overnight backpacking trip.

Specs at a Glance

  • 2MM Rubber Sole – Made from natural rubber (Malaysian rubber trees)
  • Quick Dry – Knitted with 100% recycled CoolMax™ yarn.
  • Machine Washable – 40° – delicate cycle
  • Weight: 5.64 oz for the pair (on my scale)
  • Flexible
  • Durable – Each pair lasts roughly 300 miles

What I Liked

Rubber Sole – The rubber sole on the Baresocks 2.0 is pretty thick and durable. It made for walking over sticks, pine needles, larger rocks, and on packed dirt a breeze. I wore them around Camp for an entire night and also did a .5 mile hike on a crushed gravel trail. The only issue I had was walking over the smaller single pieces of gravel, ouch! Reminded me of stepping on a lego; then again I have not trained my feet to be 100% barefoot as I do typically wear shoes outside and while hiking.

Lightweight – They feel just like socks on your feet. At a weight of about 5.6 oz, they make for the perfect Camp Shoe when backpacking and you are looking to keep your pack weight down.

Flexibility / Packability – Again, it is just like having a sock on. They are super flexible which also allows them to pack down super small in your pack. Another reason why I think they make the perfect camp shoe for backpackers and camp shoes are something I always bring with me.

Breathable – I expected to have some sweaty feet after wearing these for 4 hours around camp in a hot and humid environment. I was super surprised that was not the case. Due to it having a breathable top made of knitted Coolmax yarn, it allowed my feet to breathe just enough to keep them from being a hot sweaty, smelly mess.

Good grip – I tested out the grip of the baresocks by walking on large boulders after it had misted. The grip is solid and I actually feel more “connected” and stable with the ground than I did with my regular hiking shoes.

What to Improve

I was super impressed with the Baresocks 2.0. I would like to see different colors offered as well as different lengths. Currently, the Baresocks 2.0 is only offered in low ankle-length black.

Overall Impression

Overall, I love these and am giving them 5 stars! I found that they make the perfect lightweight and packable camp shoe. I did attempt to hike about 1/2 mile in them to test them out as a hiking shoe and honestly, if it hadn’t been for the small gravel I would have loved them for that as well. To be fair, I do walk around my house barefoot all day. My entire house has ceramic flooring tile, so I am used to walking around barefoot on hard surfaces. I had no issue wearing these and walking in grass, over larger rocks, sticks, etc… but those smaller pieces of gravel did me in.

So for me, these make the perfect lightweight and compactable camp shoe and emergency shoe. I couldn’t see myself hiking or running in them for long periods, then again my feet have not been trained for that! If yours have, I would definitely recommend giving these a try. For all other backpackers out there, give these a try for camp shoes or water crossing shoes!
