Elegear 2-Person Camping Inflatable Mattress Review

This post is sponsored by Elegear. All opinions on the Elegear 2-person pad are my own and are not influenced by any partnership or items received for free from the sponsor of this post.

This week’s gear review is a piece of Camping gear that lets couples (or 2 individuals who really like each other) get a little bit closer in the tent or while cowboy camping. It is the Elegear 2-person camping inflatable Mattress with built-in pillows and foot pump.

What I am Reviewing

Today I am reviewing an Amazon camping product from Elegear. It is the Elegear 2-person inflatable camping mattress with a built-in air pump and pillows.

Specs at a Glance

  • Thickness: 2.4 in
  • Weight: 45 oz. (52.5 oz on my scale)
  • R-value: 3.2
  • Material: 40D Nylon
  • Sleeping Pad Size: 47.2 X 78.7 X 2.4 inch
  • Size when Packed: 12.6 X 6.1 X 6.1 inch
  • Waterproof
  • Built in Pillows
  • Built in Foot Pump

What I Liked

Durable Material – The material is definitely durable, which is a must when using an air mattress outside.

Size: Once inflated, this is the perfect size for two average-sized people with each mattress coming in at about 24″ wide which is wider than most single-size pads.

R-Value: With an R-value of 3.2, the Elegear 2-person pad is a 3-season pad and perfect for most temperatures. For anything lower than 20 degrees, I’d go with a higher R-Value. Here in the south, the R-Value of this pad is good for year-round use. Side note: I tested this out during the summer and cannot verify if it holds up to its R-Value rating.

Foot pump: The foot pump worked well and was a nice function (definitely beats having to blow it up with your mouth). However, I did find it took a tad longer to inflate than the 45s the company claims.

One Way Valves: The valves on the pillows allow you to easily inflate or deflate without air rushing out so you can get just the right amount of loft. In addition to the one-way valve, you also have another valve underneath that will allow you to easily and quickly deflate the mattress.

Convert to Single Pad: You can easily fold the Elegear 2-person pad in half and button together to create a 24″ wide x 4.5″ high pad. I actually found the pad to be super comfortable while on my side when converted to a single pad.

Built-in pillows: I love the feature of the built-in pillows. They fit my head nicely and it was nice not having my pillow move around on me when I started tossing and turning.

What to Improve

Thickness: I’d like to see a thickness of at least 4″ which would help those of us who are side and back sleepers. It’s pretty uncomfortable when sleeping on your side and even your back. My hip touched the ground while on my side and my butt touched the ground while on my back. The only time I felt comfortable was on my stomach or when I converted it into a single pad (which made the thickness about 4.5″).

2nd Pillow: The 2nd pillow has to be manually inflated by mouth and does not inflate with the rest of the pad and other pillow. I find this odd, but realize it is made this way in the event you want to fold the pad in half and use it as a single pad that has more loft.

Overall Impression

Honestly, I would not use this for car camping as there are cheaper more comfortable (thicker) mattresses out there (such as air mattresses from Walmart) as weight and compactability (is that even a word, lol) usually don’t matter much when car camping. In my opinion, it makes a great bugout item to keep in your vehicle or to use on a quick spur-of-the-moment camping trip where space may be limited in what you can bring. I am a side sleeper and did not find this mattress comfortable at all until I converted it into a single mattress which defeats the purpose of it being a 2-person mattress. However, it is more comfortable than lying directly on the ground and provides some insulation from the ground with an R-value of 3.2.

The mattress is noisy, but in my experience with multiple brands, most air mattresses are. I didn’t find this any nosier than others I have tried out.

The built-in pillow and foot pump were a super nice feature that was appreciated and I realize this accounts for some of the weight. If the mattress were more comfortable, but at the same weight, I could see using this as a 2-person mattress for backpacking (or camping).
