5 Mistakes To Avoid With Your WordPress Site

WordPress is the perfect do-it-yourself platform for bloggers and small business owners.

clueless-excuseHowever, within every DIY environment, there are some things that tend to get overlooked. Many of my clients find there way to my “doorstep”  because of something they overlooked in the creation or maintenance of their Wordpress Site.

These are some of the most common mistakes wordpress users make:

  1. Using “ulgy” permalinks

When you first set up your WordPress site, the default format for permalinks  includes the database text so you could end up with a  permalink or url that looks like this:  Clearly, that is not a link that you want to share. You should change this so that your permalinks are “prettier”, or easier to read and recognize. You should instead have a permalink that looks like this:   Here is an article that explains this in more detail.

  2. Overusing  categories while underusing tags.

Have you ever visited a website that displays a list of categories or an archive page and there are so many it becomes confusing? Many Wordpress Users end up with far too many categories when in reality, they could likely scale back to only those that reflect the areas of the main niche of their site.  In other words, identify broader segmentation and set up categories based on those. Then, you can  provide a second layer of filtering on a post-by-post basis using tags. This will  help make your site less cluttered while making it easier for people to find.

  3. Forgetting To Back Up Your Style Sheet Before Making Changes.

Every wonderd what happend to your entire site when you made just one minor little change to your style sheet? If you use your CSS style sheet to manage the customization of your WordPress site, you want to be sure you create a backup copy before you begin making those changes. That way, if you “break” something,  you are able to restore your site to the styling it had before you broke it. You will be surprised how many people over look this as they simply think they will not need it. Take it from me, it is a mistake to skip this step, no matter how good you are at doing this since that sytle sheet controls the overall look of your site and affects the entire site.

  4. Not Using A Responsive Theme.

Have you ever cliked on a link in you email while on your phone or iPad only to have to squint to read or figure out how to see all of the content you received? Another mistake WordPress users make is not using a truly mobile responsive theme. A good  Mobile Responsive  delivers content equally as efficiently on a  desktop or laptop computer as they do on a tablet or smart phone. They automatically convert to the size of the mobiel device being used.  The easiest way to ensure your site will delive your content correctly, is to upgrade to one of the many responsive themes available from many designers.  You can read more about responsive themes here.

  5. Not Using SEO Features on your site.

I have stopped being surprised at how many people set up WordPress sites and neglect the SEO features that many themes come with. Nor do they bother to intall any of the great SEO plugins both free and premium that makes it so easy to ensure you are maximising SEO on your pages and posts. Some poepel pay a lot of money for psomeone to do what they can do themeselve, using teh tools avaialble. While it is OK to engage a profesional , just make sure you have chekeid out what’s avialabe before you make hte plung. One of my favorite SEO Plugins is  AIOSEO but you can find more at

Although there are many more things you need to avoid with your WordPress site, these are just 5 mistakes that I see often and am surprised that they show-up at varying levels of expertise for WordPress users I come in contact with.
