Facebook on its newsroom posted about launching its own Facebook Marketplace. A destination to discover, buy and sell items within your community.
With over 450 million people visiting buy and sell groups each month, facebook senses an opportunity and latches on to it.
Taking on the likes of Craiglist, eBay or Dubizzle in the UAE it will allow you to sell or buy items listed in the Market place.
As a seller you need to upload a picture of the item to sell, put a price and thats it. As a buyer you can discover things near you available for sale and go on with the purchase.
Facebook at the moment is not enabling payments or deliveries but helping sellers connect with buyers and once there is an interest, it is between the Buyer and the Seller to communicate over messenger , negotiate and go through with the deal.
There are features like save for later, switch city and more.
Go, sell on Facebook marketplace :
Selling an item in Marketplace is just as easy as browsing for one. Simply:
- Take a photo of your item, or add it from your camera roll
- Enter a product name, description and price
- Confirm your location and select a category
At the moment it looks like learning from its dataset that there are communities (pages) built around the concept, Facebook may want to bring it into the core product and get it mainstream attention.
My gut is maybe they want to wait and watch how it moves before they take on the Shopifys of the world or just buy it downright and become a very strong end to end ecommerce platform.
At the moment though, its a very serious competition to the like of Craiglist, eBay and Dubizzle.
In the quest to be the “Internet” both Google and Facebook seem to make some quick strides off late.
