September 23rd, 2017 was, one of the most highly anticipated dates in the history of humankind–primarily because of its connection to a ‘doomsday’ prophecy.

Fortunately, September 23rd passed without any news of asteroid collision somewhere on Earth that might trigger our extinction. That’s a relief and something that we should all be thankful for.

Our dearest Planet Earth survived another ‘death’ day and we all lived to tell the tale!

The dreaded September date may have passed quietly for us here on Earth, but that’s not the case in some far-flung region of our Solar System. Last week, using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, a group of German-led astronomers has observed the interesting characteristics of an unusual type of object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Apparently, two asteroids were found to be orbiting each other while exhibiting comet-like features, including a bright coma and a long tail.

The September 23rd Prophecy

News of the ‘unknown’ object was published on ESA’s website on September 20th, three days shy of the alleged doomsday date. Was it just coincidence or there’s a hint of truth in the prophecy?

Let us try to dissect its details.

Popularized by the numerologist and Christian conspiracy theorist David Meade, September 23rd was said to be the date wherein the mysterious planet Nibiru, also known as Planet X, will pass Earth, bringing with it catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis-indications that humankind is facing total annihilation.

Apparently, this leaves our asteroid out of the picture!

Instead, what made this conspiracy theory even more famous was NASA’s discovery of another planet they named Planet Nine-boosting Meade’s claims of a possible planetary collision.

Meade’s theory was based on codes taken from the Bible and a supposed “date marker” found on the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, pointing to the 23rd of this month as the day of reckoning. Meade was even quoted as saying:

“It is very strange indeed that both the Great Sign of Revelation 12 and the Great Pyramid of Giza both point us to one precise moment in time – September 20 to 23, 2017.”

So, what’s in Revelation 12? It says:

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth.”

Apparently, on the said date, the sun will be in the constellation Virgo, along with the moon near Virgo’s feet. In addition to that, Jupiter will be in Virgo as well, while the other planets Mercury, Venus, and Mars will be on top of the constellation, to the right of Virgo in the constellation Leo.

Dr. Danny Faulkner, a renowned author, professor, and current astronomer on staff at answersingenesis.org explained:

“So we have here a woman (Virgo) in the sky (heaven), along with the sun, and the moon at her feet. What about the 12 stars? Virtually all the websites promoting this prophetic sign state that there are nine stars in Leo, but with the addition of the three planets (which appear as bright stars), there are 12 stars.

Since Leo is to the upper right of Virgo’s head, one might see this as a crown of 12 stars, though these 12 stars will be far above Virgo’s head. Many of the videos that discuss this have various embellishments, such as tying this event to the supposed rogue planet Nibiru or the tetrad of total lunar eclipses in 2014–2015.”

He further added that nothing’s particularly unusual about the sun appearing in the constellation Virgo. It seems that as we orbit the sun each year, the sun appears to move through the 12 constellations of the zodiac, spending about a month in each one. He added:

“The month that the sun appears in Virgo is around the time of the autumnal equinox, from mid-September through late October. Nor is it unusual to find the moon near the feet of Virgo. The moon takes 27 1/3 days to orbit the earth with respect to the stars. Therefore, for a day or two each month, the moon appears near the feet of Virgo. Therefore, for a day or two each September or October, the sun appears in Virgo with the moon at her feet, so this is not that remarkable.”

NASA also dismissed Meade’s prophecy, claiming that the Planet X theory is a pure hoax. In a post published by the space agency, they said:

“Various people are “predicting” that world will end Sept. 23 when another planet collides with Earth. The planet in question, Niburu, doesn’t exist, so there will be no collision.”

So, what will happen, or rather, what was supposed to happen on September 23rd?

Nothing. NADA.

The date has nothing to do with any planet (not to mention a ‘non-existing’ one for that matter) and people alarmed by the theory should be breathing sighs of relief by now.

Earth is intact and the only astronomical activity we have, close to that date, was the two comet-like asteroids appearing to be dancing with each other light years away from us.

The Unknown Object of Jupiter

The object referred to as 288P, was first observed in September 2016 when it made a fly-by of Earth before making its closest approach to the Sun. Using the Hubble, astronomers were able to get a detailed look at the asteroid.

Now located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, 288P was revealed to be two asteroids of almost the same size and mass, orbiting each other.

The discovery was said to be a significant find as the two objects are orbiting each other, making it possible to measure the mass of the asteroids in the said systems.

However, what intrigues astronomers is the unusual activity happening on the said binary system. Jessica Agarwal of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research and the team leader of the research group said:

“We detected strong indications of the sublimation of water ice due to the increased solar heating – similar to how the tail of a comet is created.”

The fascinating movement eventually made 288P the first known binary asteroid that could also be classified as a main-belt comet. Understanding the evolution of main-belt comets could apparently help astronomers and researchers understand how Solar System came to exist.

According to ESA, “the various features of 288P – wide separation of the two components, near-equal component size, high eccentricity and comet-like activity – also make it unique among the few known wide asteroid binaries in the Solar System.”  With Agarwal citing:

“Surface ice cannot survive in the asteroid belt for the age of the Solar System but can be protected for billions of years by a refractory dust mantle, only a few meters thick.”

These findings led researchers to the conclusion that 288P has been in existence for about 5,000 years, a possible product of breakup due to its fast rotation and the two fragments moved apart by sublimation torques.
