Top 10 Fastest Electric Cars on the Planet

Electric cars are usually associated with environmental friendliness and even self-driving technology, but now, thanks to many engineering advances, they are claiming the quality usually associated with their internal combustion counterparts: speed.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are getting faster without making much noise both literally and figuratively. But we’ve heard about them, and we’ve brought some of the fastest to you.

Here is a list of the top 10 Fastest Electric Cars, including concepts and prototypes.

Top 10 Fastest Electric Cars on the Planet:

1. Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3

OK, the Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3 may look more like a fighter jet than a car. But this beast had to top the list, as the world’s fastest EV!

The French manufacturer holds the record with this 11-meter-long and 1-meter-wide carbon fiber vehicle.

After its 307.6 mph top speed was hit in 2010, the VBB 3 came back to the Bonneville Salt Flats (Utah) in September 2016 to set a new Land Speed Record at 342.144mph.

By the way, it was designed by students.

2. Lucid Air

Developed by Lucid Motors, the Lucid Air is a high-end electric supercar, with no less than 1000 horsepower, that’s perhaps a direct competitor to Tesla S.

An Alpha prototype of the Lucid Air, has hit top speed of 235 mph (0–60 mph in 2.5 seconds) in early July after speed limiter software was removed.

To be launched in 2019, there are 255 units of the 1,000 bhp version sold at $ 100,000, and the $ 60,000 standard version with 400 bhp.

3. Rimac Concept One

The Croatian elegant electric car, the Rimac Concept One, boasts 1,224 bhp horsepower and a 221 mph top speed, is one of the most powerful and fastest EVs on sale.

We had discovered the Concept One as a concept car in Frankfurt in 2011, now it is such a mature car that a second version is under development, the 1384HP Concept S.

4. Vanda Dendrobium

The Singaporean company Vanda has unveiled its vision of a silent, spectacular and aggressive supercar, dubbed the Dendrobium, after an orchid variety.

Planned to be marketed as early as 2020, the Dendrobium is already displaying stunning performance: 1,000 bhp, 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and a 200 mph top speed.

5. Nio EP9

Self-proclaimed the fastest electric car in the world, the Nio EP9, by Chinese EV startup Nio, is an electric hypercar with power and performance and akin to those of professional track racing supercars.

The EP9’s extreme aerodynamic support, 1,341bhp, lightweight carbon fibre chassis, and 194mph top speed enabled it to set a new lap record (6m 45.9s) for the Nürburgring Nordschleife race track in Germany.

6. Genovation GXE

Developed by Genovation Cars, a small carmaker in Maryland, the GXE is, in fact, a sixth generation Corvette to which a battery of 44 kWh has been grafted.

The GXE has managed to reach a maximum of 209 miles per hour (which is a street legal EV record).

Expected for 2019, the GXE will reportedly come with a hefty pricetag close to a million USD.

7. Toroidion 1MW

Revealed two years ago by Finnish carmaker Toroidion, the electric supercar Toroidion 1MW has now seen its first proof-of-concept produced.

As tests have yet to conclude, we still don’t know much about the Torodion specs.

But from the name alone we can deduce its power: the 1MW stands for 1 megawatt, that’s about 1,360 HP roughly translated. With that power, its top speed could be around 200 mph.

8. Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous Mode

After the Porsche 918 Spyder and the LaFerrari, Tesla’s Model S is the third fastest accelerating production car ever produced.

When the Ludicrous Mode is activated, the pure electric car goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds, with a 155 mph top speed.

9. Aston Martin RapidE

After two years as a concept, Aston Martin announced the production of its 100% electric car, RapidE.

Looking like the Rapide S, the RapidE ditches the V12 combustion engine for an all-electric powertrain with a top speed of 155 mph.

Scheduled to start (limited) production in 2019 with only 155 units, the all-electric RapidE will be the first by the British iconic carmaker, and there is a good chance that we’ll see James Bond hop in one in the future.

10. La Jamais Contente

Last but not least, La Jamais Contente (The Never Happy) deserves an honorable mention!

In April 29, 1899, Belgian Camille Jenatzy aboard La Jamais Contente set a new World Land Speed Record and crossed the symbolic bar of 100 kilometers per hour (66mph).

Weighing more than a ton and capable of developing 100 horsepower, the bullet-shaped La Jamais Contente was an electric vehicle that surpassed gasoline-powered cars at the time.

We hope you enjoyed this list–which one do you want the most?
