Whenever there is a debate going on about data science, it is always presumed that since this field involves data and uses has the term “science” in it, it is only useful for technical fields and not for non technical fields such as Business. Bu this has been proved wrong as now more and more organisations use data science for different operations and purposes. But how data science has proved to be effective for businesses? Does it involve business understanding?

As far as my experience goes, yes it is vital for data scientists to have business understanding ,which involves understanding the problem which has to be solved along with its impact on the organisation. Usually the general solutions to these kinds of problems is recast the entire problem and iteratively make a solution based on certain analysis. But as we have heard that modern problems require modern solutions, it is not the same case if you want to solve modern business problems.

Modern solutions require creativity such as creative methods to formulate the problem through models , so that it is better understood and imitable. Secondly , it involves use of powerful but correct tools of analysis which are suitable for solving the dynamic problem.

Although the above mentioned content doesn’t guarantee success in finding the solution for all the business problems but can help to build up creative thinking which is essential for business understanding and is a prerequisite in today’s time to be a data scientist. Hence, it can be concluded that business understanding is quintessential for data scientist in today’s time.
