Underwriting Insurance Companies in Nigeria are divided into 3 namely:
General Insurance Companies: These are Insurance Companies licensed to underwrite only the General Classes of Business (e.g. Fire Insurance, Motor Vehicle Insurance, Theft/Burglary Insurance etc.) with the exception of Life Assurance Businesses.
Life Assurance Companies: As the name implies, they are only licensed to underwrite Life businesses.
Composite Insurance Companies: These are the Insurance Companies which are licensed to write both the General Insurance businesses and Life Assurance Businesses.
