How to Install Kodi on Retropie 4.1 and 4.2 – Easy Setup Guide

Learning how to install Kodi on RetroPie 4.1 is no rocket-science. The entire process will take place in the OS menu system. All you need to ensure smooth installation is get a fast internet connection.

How to Install Kodi Krypton Version 17 and Higher on RetroPie 4.1

Follow these simple steps to enjoy using Kodi V17 (Krypton) on RetroPie 4.1:

  1. Open your Raspberry PI system and start RetroPie
  2. Go to the main menu by clicking on the RetroPie Logo with a red joystick
  3. Scroll down to the “RETROPIE Setup” in the main menu
  4. You will receive a gray box on a blue screen

How to Install Kodi Jarvis Version 16 or Below on RetroPie 4.1

The installation process for Kodi V16 (Jarvis) is the same as above. You have to visit the RetroPie setup screen, go to the optional packages inventory, and select Kodi V16. The installation process will take about 5 to 10 minutes. Once completed, you can access Kodi from the Ports section on RetroPie. However, since the OS does not install PVRs, you will have to run the following commands in a terminal:

If you want to search for the available PVRs, simple enter this code: apt-cache search kodi-pvr. For users who just want to install one PVR, in this case the IPTV Simple Client for watching movies/TV shows, use the following code: sudo apt-get install kodi-pvr-iptvsimple. Follow the steps below to install Kodi V17 (Krypton) on RetroPie 4.2 via command line:

  1. Start RetroPie and go to the Setup directory
  2. Launch the RetroPie setup script
  3. cd /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/
  4. sudo ./
  5. From the menu, select “Manage Packages”
  6. Click on “Manage optionally packages”
  7. Locate Kodi, hit enter, wait for installation
  8. Visit Ports and enjoy using Kodi for watching TV shows/movies!

How to Install Kodi Jarvis Version 16 or Below On RetroPie 4.2

The process of installing Kodi V16 (Jarvis) on RetroPie can be done using both the methods mentioned above. However, the only difference is that when in the “Manage Optionally Packages” menu, you will have to conduct a Kodi search to find what versions are available. You can do so by performing a sudo apt-cache policy on the entertainment service, then use the install command with the package you want.

  1. Install PINN Lite on RetroPie
  2. Power on the OS and wait for PINN to load

  5. For Kodi, it is advised to use OSMC or LibreELEC
  6. Now select RetroPie and click on the install button
  7. PINN will download and install the chosen systems
  8. Manually install the NOOBS Companion Add-on in Kodi
  9. Go to the Kodi main menu and select Kodi Add-ons
  10. Choose “NOOBS Companion”
  11. Move to RetroPie and open context menu
  12. Select “Install Boot-Back”
