Fix: Windows Logon Screen Showing Only Last Logged-on User and “Other User”

By default Windows Logon Screen will only show two icons. The first icon is the last user who logged on and the second icon always shows “Other User”. When the latter was clicked, two text fields would appear prompting for username and password.

However, some users may not like the feature as it will give away the identity of user who used the computer. Especially on common shared PC, user who forgotten to change the user account on display can accidentally lock other user out if trying too many incorrect password. So here we’re going to show you how to make Windows not display only last login user name.

Method 1: Group Policy Trick

Follow the steps below to tweak the group policy that instructs Windows not to remember and display the last user name who logged in:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box, then type secpol.msc and press Enter to open the Local Security Policy Editor.
  2. Navigate to Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.
  3. In the right pane, double click on Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name and set it to Enabled.
  4. Click Apply.

Method 2: Registry Fix

However, Local Security Policy Editor might not be available on Home editions of Windows. In this case, you can use this registry trick instead:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box, then type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  3. In the right pane, double click on dontdisplaylastusername registry key value, and set its value data to 1.

Reboot your computer and make your changes take effect. The Windows login screen should now work as expected, showing the avatar for all registered users. Enjoy!
