Infinix Zero 5 Review- A Promising Mid-Range Phone

Infinix is a relatively new brand in India and a few months back, they launched a couple of interesting budget smartphones in India. Now, the company has announced their flagship Phone, the Infinix Zero 5 in India. The device sports a 6 inch Full HD display and is powered by Helio P25 octa-core processor with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is also a dual Camera and a good selfie camera going by the current trend. So how does the Infinix Zero 5 stand up against the competition in this segment? Let’s find out in the detailed Infinix Zero 5 review.

Infinix Zero 5 is priced Rs 17,999

Here is the video review of the device.

Design and Build:

The Infinix Zero 5 is a massive phone in terms of design with the 6-inch display size. The phone is made of metal and has a unibody construction. Even though it is huge in size, the company has made sure it isn’t too bulky thanks to the slim design. The rear panel has a matte finish and has tapered edges giving a good feel while holding the phone. The power and volume keys along with the SIM card slot sits on the right side, while the micro SD slot is on the left side. The bottom section houses the 3.5mm audio jack, USB type C port, and speaker unit. The rear panel has the dual camera unit which has a resemblance to the Huawei P9. The camera unit has a dual camera and the LED flash which is placed centrally. The fingerprint scanner sits below the camera unit along with Infinix branding.

The front panel has 16MP selfie camera, soft flash and the 6-inch display with on-screen navigational buttons. The build quality feels premium for the pricing and is built to last. The phone is offered in Champagne Gold, Sandstone Black, and Bordeaux Red. It is not a device for one-handed use due to a large display.

Display:

Infinix Zero 5 sports a 5.98 inch Full HD (1920 X 1080p) resolution display. The display is vivid and sharp and has 2.5D glass along with Gorilla glass protection. The display is easily one of the best aspects of the device. The colors of the display are vivid and excellent for multimedia consumption. The viewing angles are quite good and so is the outdoor visibility. The touch response is very good and there is hardly anything to complain in the display department and it is a delight to use.

Software:

Infinix Zero 5 is powered by Android 7.0 and has a custom UI called XOS. Similar to other custom ROMs we have seen XOS also adds some features on top of Android. It also features a customized notification and quick toggle. The settings panel is also custom one.

XOS comes with some useful features and customization option. There is support for themes which you can download using the themes app. The UI has multiple home screens but at the same time, if you swipe from bottom to top, you also get an app drawer.

The UI also provides tools like a compass, file manager, notes and multi-account or dual apps feature. There is also a Phone Master app to clean up and optimize the phone for best performance. The security app on the device provides app lock and also phone finder features. There is also a dedicated power manager to manage battery and enable ultra power saving modes.

Under the settings menu, you can also get to see some support for gestures. While the UI isn’t as feature rich like the EMUI or MIUI, it feels quite good. Infinix is also promising one major update for the device and we are expecting the company to roll out Oreo for the device.

Performance:

Powering the Zero 5 is a MediaTek Helio P25 processor, with four cores clocked at 1.7GHz and the other four clocked at 2.4GHz. There is 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage included and there is also a Pro version with 128GB of storage. The performance of the device in day to day tasks was quite good and there was hardly any issues or lags. With 6GB of RAM at its disposal, the multitasking was also good. The company should have done a bit better with RAM management. When it comes to gaming, the device performed decently well and P25 is able to handle some games with ease while few others showed lag and frame drops.

The phone comes with USB  Type C port and it supports USB OTG out of the box. There is dual SIM card support along with SD card and it has support for 4G LTE and VoLTE. The speaker performance was quite good and there was no issues with the call quality.

Infinix Zero 5 comes with 64GB of storage and there is also 128GB storage available at higher cost.

Camera:

Infinix Zero 5 packs a dual camera set up and has a 12MP regular camera and 13MP telephoto lens on the rear panel. On the front panel, you get a 16MP selfie shooter. Both the front and the rear camera comes with flash. The camera interface is good with all features included along with portrait mode, bokeh mode and more. Looking a the camera samples taken with this device, the rear 12+ 13MP camera combination is able to deliver good colors and decent clarity in daylight. The only issue regarding the daylight captures is the oversharpening of images resulting in grainy images. The close-up images also came out well.

The low light captures taken with the device was quite good with reduced noise and they did perform well for this segment. The selfie experience of the 16MP shooter was good and there is also bokeh mode included. Although the mode is not accurate, it helps to get decent results with background defocused.T The portrait mode in the camera is also quite good. The video recording of the device was quite average. Here are some of the samples taken with the device.

Battery:

Zero 5 comes with 4350mAh battery and the battery capacity is pretty large. There is also a 18W charger included in the device for fast charging. The battery performance of the device was pretty good and we got more than a day of usage with the battery. The screen on time we got was around 7- 7.5 hours. We feel the battery performance is good considering the massive 6 inch Full HD display.

Verdict:

The Infinix Zero 5 has a lot of things going its way including good build, great display, customizable software, good performance and good battery life along with a decent camera. While the camera is good, there is a bit of fine tuning required as the segment has some really good camera smartphones. Priced at Rs 17,999 Infinix Zero 5 offers good value for money and is for people who love large displays and interested in multimedia consumption. The other alternative to Zero 5 is the Mi Max 2 from Xiaomi.
