How to Change Display and Keyboard Language on Windows Phone

Microsoft’s Windows 10 mobile is the best ever Windows Phone operating system. You can change display Language and keyboard to match your local need. Improved personalization features make’s it super easy for you.

The process is very much similar to the language settings on Windows 10 but here these two settings are separate. Still, accompany easy other as every language pack has its own keyboard.

Note:  An internet connection is required to download the new features.

Let’s do it-

Change Display Language of your Windows Phone

On Start swipe towards the right for All apps menu and select Settings to open it. You can also pull-down Action Center and tap on All settings.

In Settings select Time & language and then select Language to access  settings in Windows 10 Mobile.

Here you will see your Windows Phones current display language. Under the name, there will be —-

  • Phone language
  • Regional format
  • speech
  • keyboard

In front of them, you can see the status either active or inactive.

But here we have to change the display language of your Windows 10 Mobile phone, so we have to first add the new language that you want to use. For doing it, tap + Add languages on the top.

Then select a language from the list and tap Ok to download the new pack. A pop-up will appear, asking you to download language feature? It will also list the download size, select YES to download and No to cancel.

Wait till it completes. When done, restart your Windows Phone to activate the newly installed language pack. See the screenshot below, tap on Restart phone and complete the installation.

It will not take longer. To set the newly added pack as default tap-hold on it and select move up. The language pack on the top is treated as default one. And you are done.

Now you can enjoy your Windows 10 Mobile device in your local character set anywhere. Useful if you have purchased device somewhere else in another region.

Change Keyboard Language on Windows Phone

To change the keyboard language and layout Go to Settings > Time & language > keyboard. Tap + Add keyboards at the top.

Select a keyboard from the list, along with name there will be the size in MB also. Made you choice, tap Ok to start the download. See the screenshot below, here English (United States) is 6 MB in size. Size varies depending on the country.

Wait for the download to complete, when done your new keyboard is ready to use.

Bonus Tip: You can even change keyboard options by tapping on the keyboard and managing settings. These options include —-

  • Suggest Text
  • Highlight misspelled words
  • Correct misspelled words
  • Suggest emoticons
  • Insert a space after I select a suggestion
  • Insert a full stop after I double-tap the spacebar
  • Capitalize the first letter of a sentence
  • ………………

The options differ depending on the language and layout.

Switching between keyboards

I have installed two keyboards on my Windows 10 Mobile phone. But I have set English as my default keyboard and using another Devanagari (Hindi) as the second option.

While typing you can switch between the installed keyboards by swiping towards right or left on the spacebar.

Typing is easy but not fast with multiple keyboards. I prefer English as default.

Remove a language pack or keyboard

If you have installed more than one language pack, remove the ones that you don’t use. It helps in saving space on your phone. Having different keyboards installed at a time can sometimes lead to distraction. Removing or deleting them  doesn’t require and internet connection.

To remove a language pack or keyboard Go to Settings > Time & language.  Choose one of the two steps below depending on your choice.

1. Select language and tap-hold on the pack and select Remove from the menu that appears. And it’s gone.

2. Select keyboard and tap-hold on the keyboard and select Remove option on it. Done, …….. gone.
