9 Ways to Shut Down or Restart a Windows 10 PC

There are several different ways to Shut down your Windows 10 PC or device. Some of them are very common ones that you use daily but some are a bit different and new. In this post, you will read about nine ways to Shut Down, restart, sleep, and more.

1. Shut Down Using ALT + F4 keyboard shortcut

This shortcut is very useful not only to turn off your PC but also closes the active Window. When you use it in a program it quits the program. So first go back on the desktop and press

2. Shut Down Using The Start Menu

Another easy method to turn off your Windows 10 computer is with the Start Menu. This is the default option for this purpose. Microsoft has redesigned the Start menu in Windows 10 operating system but the power option is still in the same place. To use it,

 3. Shut Down Using The WinX Power User Tasks Menu

The third way is to use the Win + X power user tasks menu. It is a different menu like Start menu but with more useful options like Control panel, command prompt (simple and admin) and many other utilities.

To open it, press Windows key + X shortcut or Right-click the Windows icon. On touch devices long the start button to open it.

Hove your mouse or finger on Shut down or sign out in the right direction to see the shutdown, restart, and sleep options.

4. Shut down Computer from Ctrl+Alt+Del Screen

This method is generally used access task manager or Log out from a user account. To use it, Press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys. It will take to a blue screen with four options.

Click or tap on the Power button in the right corner, and click/tap on the shut down option.

5. Shut Down From The Lock Screen

You can also shut down your device from the Lock screen or Login screen before entering your password. It also appears if you have enabled require a password on wakeup from sleep.

Don’t enter the password instead, press the icon in the bottom right corner to access the usual shutdown, restart and sleep options.

You can lock your account to view this screen. Open the Start menu and click on your profile on the top, select Lock from the drop-down menu.

6. Shut Down computer with cmd

Command prompt’s “Shutdown” command gives more options to power off your computer. You can perform all the basic options with a timer and more.

To use command line interface, press Windows key + X and select Command Prompt. Alternatively, you can search for it in Start menu.

In the cmd window, type shutdown /s and press Enter to shut down your device. To restart the device, replace shutdown /s with shutdown /r.

7. Shutdown computer with Run

The Run method is similar to the cmd method. To open Run press the Windows key + R, then type the shutdown /s command and press Enter to shut down your device.

8. With Slidetoshutdown

Most of the users don’t know about this feature of Windows 10. It is similar to the Windows 10 Mobile when you long press power button. It says “Slide down to power off”. But on your PC it will say you to “Slide down to shut down your PC”.

Press Windows key + R to open the Run window, type slidetoshutdown.exe, and press enter or click OK.

Slide the slide to shut down your PC screen to the bottom of the touch screen to shut down.

If you just click on the screen it will cancel the process.

9. Shut Down Using The Power Button On The Device

To power off a Windows 10 touch device, like a smartphone, or a tablet, is faster with the power button. Long press your device’s power button (the on/off button). it will show a “Slide down to power off” screens. Drop it down and it’s done.

But on the desktop, it is a bit different. You have to set Windows 10 Power options to shut down your PC when you press the power button. For this do the following.

Click start and type Power options and hit Enter. In the opened windows click or tap Choose what the power buttons do link in the left pane.

In front of When I press the power button set Shut down and save changes.
