Over the past several years I have given several presentations regarding safety and security. The typical Response I get is that all safety and security training and information focuses on the problem and does not provide an answer. Furthermore, that is why I have always focused on providing answers rather than stating the problem. Obviously, we know there’s a problem, or I would not be there to discuss solutions. Let’s dig into what an incident response plan is and how to start putting one into effect for your facility.
What is an Incident Response Plan?
People may argue with me, but there is a big difference between a safety plan and an Active Crisis Response plan. A security program includes all safety concerns that can happen on a daily basis. However, an active crisis response plan focuses on the main events that could have a severe impact on the quality of life for you and your staff. An active crisis response plan should be simple and to the point. Proactivity is the best way to respond to an active crisis. People tend to go back to the way they were trained during a high-stress situation. Active crisis preparation lessens the chance of injury.
The Objectives of an Incident Response Plan.
- The program should be organized and accurate for a variety of possible emergencies.
- This plan should provide for the safety of all patrons and stakeholders.
- This program will include the use of CRS Notify emergency alert system and the means of communication during an emergency.
- The program should also seek to decrease liability that may develop during a crisis.
- This program should focus on proactive measures, rather than reactive.
- This program should help staff members, patrons, and other team members in identifying and responding to potential threats and emergency situations.
What is the Mission of an Incident Response Plan?
To use advanced technology and response tactics to provide a safe environment through the addition of a practical and efficient emergency response plan which will create a community response to any situation that threatens their quality of life.
[Your Facility] includes the option of choice, to either run, fight, or hide during an active shooter or violent attack crisis. Training should be mandatory for current and future staff. Monthly training is essential. Practical training should be at the attention of the management.
How to Start an Incident Response Plan Policy
[Your Facility] uses a response options method when responding to armed criminals, active shooters, and deadly attacks. This process will allow faculty members any likely assistants or patrons, to guide themselves and others who are on lockdown to make the best decision possible under the given circumstances. It is recommended that faculty members, assistants, and patrons first trigger lockdown mode in the event of an active shooter or deadly attack. Once on lockdown, the decisions under the circumstances require them to follow one of the following options:
- Freeze and remain in lockdown mode
- Counterattack using any available object(s). Remember, don’t try to be a hero. This tactic should ONLY be used if the attacker has gained access to the premises and you are under direct threat.
- Evacuate to the predetermined community rally point.
The goal is to give staff options when responding to any threats. Providing options allows them to create a survival mindset should they be in a dangerous situation.
