Apple to fix Siri on iOS 10 to pronounce celebrity’s name right

Apple to fix Siri on iOS 10 to pronounce celebrity’s name rightSiri, despite having come a long way since it was released as an innovative, yet buggy virtual assistant in 2011, is still far from perfect.

Yes, it’s improved a lot since then, and it’s gotten a wealth of new sub-features, but there are many things one can expect out of the feature, especially when iOS 10 rolls out on September 30. Such as, for instance, properly pronouncing the name of certain celebrities.

That latter issue may be sorted out on the next iOS 10 updates, and it’s all thanks to veteran singer and actress Barbra Streisand, who had, according to reports, spoken to Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook himself and asked him to fix how Siri would mispronounce her name.

This is, of course, a far more direct tactic than what the average user does, which is to take to social media or Apple’s support forum and explain the problem/ask for solutions.

But if you’ve been a big-name star since the 1960s and, as Siri would tell you, the only female vocalist with hit records for six consecutive decades, you’ll be likely to go straight to the boss.

Speaking to NPR last month, Streisand had confirmed that Siri would finally be pronouncing her name right on September 30 when Apple rolls out iOS 10.

She had discovered this bug when NPR’s reporter asked Siri the above question – who was the only female vocalist with six straight decades of hit records on the charts – only for her to discover Siri wasn’t getting her name right.

“Streisand with a soft S, like sand on the beach,” said Streisand. “I’ve been saying this for my whole career. And so what did I do? I called the head of Apple, Tim Cook, and he delightfully agreed to have Siri change the pronunciation of my name, finally, with the next update on September 30th.”

Apple has yet to confirm September 30 as iOS 10’s official release date, and while one should take any report of that release date with a grain of salt, it does seem to come straight from Apple, based on Streisand’s story about her little chit-chat with Apple CEO Cook.
