Nokia 6 (2018) Launched: Price, Specs, Features, Initial Review

HMD Global has recently released the Nokia 6 (2018) model in China. This is the first smartphone launched by the company in the New Year. It is the successor to last year’s Nokia 6 smartphone. The 2018 model is made official in the Chinese market and the global rollout of the same is about to be announced by the company.

Nokia 6 (2018): Price, Availability

The Nokia 6 (2018) smartphone is already available for pre-orders on a Chinese e-commerce website and the sale will begin on January 10. The latest Nokia mobile is likely to get announced in India soon after the China availability. The handset is offered in two variants- 32GB internal storage variant priced at CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs 14,500) and 64GB storage variant at CNY 1,699 (roughly Rs 16,500). The phones will be available in Silver and Black colour options.

Nokia 6 (2018): Design, Features

The original Nokia 6 model of 2017 had a physical home button at the front which doubles as a fingerprint scanner. However, the latest Nokia mobile has dropped the capacitive keys in favour of bezel-less display design. However, the phone has maintained the 16:9 aspect ratio and misses out the popular 18:9 aspect ratio. The metal unibody design of the device is built using 6000 series aluminium.

Nokia 6 (2018): Specifications

The latest Nokia mobile features a 5.5-inch full HD (1080×1920 pixels) IPS display. It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS out-of-the-box and is likely to get an update for Android 8.0 Oreo OS soon. However, HMD Global hasn’t said about the frequency of updates for the new Nokia smartphone. The handset is equipped with a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor paired 4GB of RAM and internal storage of 32GB or 64GB. Furthermore, there is a hybrid dual-SIM configuration which allows microSD card of up to 128GB.

On the camera front, there is a 16MP primary rear camera with dual-tone LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, and PDAF. Up front, the Nokia 6 (2018) has an 8MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and 84-degree wide-angle lens.

Additionally, the new Nokia mobile supports Nokia’s proprietary Bothie feature which is a Dual Sight technology. This basically captures simultaneous images from the front and rear camera sensor and forms a single image containing the view of both sides. The connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, FM Radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Type-C, GPS/A-GPS, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

A 3000mAh battery completes the package with fast charging technology.

Nokia 6 (2018): Initial Review

Most of the smartphone vendors have ditched the frontal capacitive keys and the fingerprint sensor to achieve the 18:9 aspect ratio. Surprisingly, the reason behind dropping the capacitive keys and the shifting of a fingerprint scanner is not justifiable yet. Instead, there is now on-screen navigation option offered on the Nokia 6 (2018) model. Such navigation interface resembles the user interface of smartphones having stock Android UI.

One of the criticisms with the original Nokia 6 was related to its performance. The Snapdragon 430 on the Nokia 6 was competent to handle day-to-day tasks quite well, but it struggles when it comes to full HD resolution offering. With Snapdragon 630 and 4GB RAM, the new Nokia 6 model is expected to bring more power and improved performance.
