With Sun NXT, Sun TV Network steps foot in the burgeoning digital streaming space of India

Since India is still on the cusp of the digital content Streaming revolution, the pace of the same has been accelerated with the entry of local and international giants. While Netflix, Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video are running around to sign deals and bring local content to their library to attract the populace, homegrown media houses are jumping into the game with their own digital content streaming platforms.

The latest one to join this burgeoning space is the wide-known television broadcaster — Sun TV Networks. This Kalanithi Maran-owned network has announced that launch of its own content streaming platform known as Sun NXT to attract a majority of the populace from South India.

Sun TV is making a library of over 4000 titles, over 40 channels streaming live, catch-up TV, kids shows, news, comedy, and other content available in all four south-Indian languages — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The company is planning to debut original content on Sun Nxt in the coming months. It has already provided prominent features such as offline and HD viewing, as well as cross-platform support.

The application, which has made its debut both on Android and iOS, has received phenomenal response from the public. Sun NXT is available globally, with downloads over 1.1 million in just within four days of its launch. This caused the same to stay among the top trending apps list through these last four days and the company is contempt with its attempt at bringing local video content to its local masses. Speaking of the same, the official statement added,

We are delighted to receive such an astonishing response for the Sun NXT from the public. Thanks to their interest, the Sun NXT crossed over 1.1 million downloads.

This is the quickest path to the first million among its peers in the category. Momentum is strong and accelerating and all signs point towards the next milestone of over 2 million downloads.

Sun NXT, for those still aloof, has been launched as a subscription-based video-on-demand (VoD) service — adopting a model that is very similar to its competitors. Sun TV is offering customers three very affordable plans to gain access to its huge content library.

  • Monthly plan — ₹50 for 30 days
  • Quarterly plan — ₹130 for 90 days
  • Annual plan — ₹495 for 365 days

The television network is also providing everyone with a thirty-day trial period, only after which does the subscription payments start to kick in (depending on the model you’ve chosen). Sun NXT is also available on the desktop web and the website is available for access right here. This pits Sun NXT in competition to major digital streaming platforms named in the beginning, coupled with those launched by Ekta Kapoor (AltBalaji) and Viacom18 (Voot).
