Taking its arch-nemesis Microsoft head-on, Sony took center stage ahead of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo and unveiled trailers of franchise reboots, as well as new game titles. The Japanese giant did not have any new consoles to show off because it had already released the PS4 Pro earlier this year.
It not only showed off some of the most anticipated PS4 game titles but one-upped Redmond by teasing game titles coming to the company’s Playstation VR platform. Microsoft had Project Scorpio, which is now known as Xbox One X, to show off and VR didn’t make the cut for them.
Here’s a brief look at the noticeable announcements, which are mostly trailers of already known upcoming game titles, from Sony’s hour-long press conference:
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
This iteration of the Uncharted franchise won’t be similar to previous ones because of the new (but already existing) leads. It is the first Uncharted game to not feature Nathan Drake as the headliner. He has instead been replaced by Uncharted 2 treasure hunter Chloe Frazer and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End mercenary Nadine Ross. They’re after an ancient relic, which us Indians can relate to, the Tusk of Ganesha.
Spider-Man makes a return
With the Spider-Man series getting a big screen reboot, with fresh new faces and an Avenger connection, Insomniac is releasing a game title to accompany the same sometime in 2018. The trailer video attached underneath shows how our beloved Spidey will be able to web-sling and explore the open world while fighting crime and combining moves. It will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive title.
Skyrim onboards the VR train
With Sony’s PlayStation VR already in hands of more than one million consumers, the Japanese giant is looking to bolster the said platform with some new game titles. Thus, Sony has today shown off that its role-playing adventure The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is coming to the VR platform. There is presently no release date for the same.
In addition to its infamous Skyrim game title, Sony is also bringing other new titles — the first-person horror title, The Inpatient and a fishing simulator for Final Fantasy– Monster of the Deep to its virtual reality platform. This could be a differentiating factor of the Japanese giant’s VR efforts as compared to its competitors.
God of War 4 trailer
First unveiled at the previous E3 conference, we’ve today been greeted with the gameplay trailer for the next God of War game. The said game title, whose trailer is attached below, shows that Kratos (shown underneath) matures as a character and brings along his son — Atreus — for this gory adventure. This fighting game is also scheduled to release in 2018, with no definite date in sight.
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds
The trailer underneath shows off the expansion package (DLC) that is coming for the said game later this year. And it looks pretty sweet, just check out the trailer attached below to know more.
This is another game title that was announced at Sony’s E3 conference last year. The Japanese giant has today released a lengthy five-minute trailer of Sony Bend’s open-world zombie survival game. The action-packed adventure is meant for The Walking Dead enthusiasts, who’d like to slay some zombies or use them to their advantage in the gameplay.
Shadow of the Colossus
This classic game title, which was first released for the PlayStation 2, has only received a remastered reboot back in 2011. But, this game title is now being prepped for an HD remake for the PlayStation 4. It is als0 expected to release sometime in 2018.
This is one of the most interesting announcements of the day. Sony has today announced PlayLink, a PlayStation mobile app which is primarily aimed at non-gamers. It enables you, which can be multiple in number, to jump into special games and control the full gameplay experience rather than sitting idle and viling time away.
Sony is also rebooting its massive fan-focused convention, PlayStation Experience, later this year. It is coming back to the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California for a two-day event on December 9 and 10. This is a major stage for the Japanese giant to showcase its upcoming announcements and host several e-sports events, such as last year’s Call of Duty World League Invitational.
