E-wallets have seen massive growth post demonetization and due to government’s push towards digital economy. Various schemes, discounts, updates and changes were introduced by mobile wallets in order to attract customers to their respective platforms. One of the significant changes is the introduction of multilingual support to the platform, so as to enable users to transact in their native and known regional languages.
The said interface has already been channelized in popular payment apps such as Paytm, PhonePe, SBI Buddy etc. Taking the trend further, Mobikwik, a mobile wallet company has now added support for five more regional languages into its application. Now, Mobikwik is equipped with as many as 8 languages including English, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.
While MobiKwik has employed the services of third-party translation companies for the said purpose, its major rival Paytm relies on in-house talent for building their local language interface. Integrating local languages help connect users even from tier-II and tier-III cities by breaking the language barriers, hence, further increasing the user base.
Commenting on the same, Upasana Taku, Co-founder of Mobikwik said,
We have further launched regional versions of our app in Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu to further promote the adoption of digital wallet payments in rural India.
Paytm had updated its interface with local languages back in November taking the count to ten. Though this version is only available to Android users. Post its release, the company claims to have witnessed 80% of growth of user engagement. Moreover, the company has recently also gained a formal approval from RBI to launchits payments bank.
Taking about MobiKwik, the multilingual interface is based upon app’s lighter variant MobiKwik LITE. Further, the app can also be easily downloaded using slow data connections by just placing a miss call. Apart from it, Taku Co-founder for MobiKwik has recently claimed that Paytm is misleading the populace of the country by posting inflated user base and transaction numbers.
Another well received mobile payment solution, Oxigen wallet, powered by Oxigen Services Pvt. Ltd is still working towards the interface and is currently operational in English as well. Sunil Kulkarni, Deputy MD for Oxigen Services commented as,
We are working on the idea and by the end of the next month, the users will be able to transact in other languages as well.
