Google Home can now order you a pizza and play Netflix while you wait for it to arrive

The battle for home assistants is on. It was sparked off when Amazon came up with its Alexa voice Assistant, now though, the arena has a whole bunch of players including — yes, Google. Google, which likes to have a finger in every tech pie came up with its Google Home assistant a couple of months ago. Well, Home is now receiving some cool new updates from its home base.

So, I am guessing you already are familiar with Google Home. If you aren’t, I recommend you read our coverage from when the Home was launched back in October. To put it in a nutshell, Google Home is a small speaker that packs Google’s voice assistant inside. So basically, you can just go “Okay Google….” like you do with your Android smartphone the few times you are very bored and have nothing better to do.

Given a body of its own though, Google’s AI assistant packs a lot more promise. And the company is now increasing its capabilities by way of updates. Starting this week, Google Home is capable of a bunch of more feats.Lets take a look.

So first off, if you are a Netflix fan and prefer to have both your fingers dipped in popcorn — well, you can now use the Home assistant to change your channels for you. Assuming that you are rocking a Chromecast, Google Home now lets you choose your poison, skip through episodes, and do all other basic controls such as rewind, pause and turn on captions — literally without moving an inch. Just shout.

Google is also letting you bring up your photos onto the bug screen. Considering that the Artificial Intelligence Google uses to sort and sift through your pictures is….um, pretty intelligent — You can use Home to call up pictures by date, places, things and so on.

Finally, Google is partnering up with a whole bunch of third-parties to seriously make your Google Home indispensable. Whether it is ordering a pizza from Dominoes, pulling up some answers from Quora — Google Home is your man assistant.

And in case you are wondering, here is a complete list of the new services supported by Google Home:

  • 21 Blackjack
  • Akinator the genie
  • Anchor
  • And Chill
  • Argus
  • Ask Jelly
  • busuu – language learning
  • CNBC
  • Domino’s
  • Eliza
  • ELLE Horoscopes by The Astro Twins
  • FitStar Personal Trainer
  • Food Network
  • Genius
  • Headspace
  • HuffPost Headline Quiz
  • itcher
  • Lonely Planet
  • NBC News
  • NPR One
  • Number Genie
  • Product Hunt
  • Quora
  • Quotery
  • SongPop
  • Sub War
  • Tender
  • The Bartender
  • The Wall Street Journal
  • Todoist
  • Trivia Blast
  • VentureBeat News
  • WebMD
  • Wonder

Well, if it continues at this rate, the Google Home assistant might just leave Amazon’s Alexa behind. The latter has picked up a fair amount of “Skills” as well, however, Google’s open ecosystem is likely to net it a lot more capabilities once independent developers sit down to create stuff for the Speaker.
