Not a single day passes when we don’t get to see a leak that is related to the Galaxy S9. Nevertheless, the latest one suggests yet another feature that might make its way to the 2018 Samsung flagship. While the iris scanner and Facial Recognition have offered a rather clumsy experience on the current Samsung flagships, the next iteration might include a combination of both to authenticate the user in a superior manner.
Apparently, the feature would be called ‘Intelligent Scan’, a name that has been spotted in the Samsung’s Settings app. A video has also been made available that shows how the feature would work and has been included below. The feature has spotted by a developer who dug inside the Settings APK of the Android Oreo beta update for Galaxy Note 8.
The developer mentions that the Intelligent Scan combines both the facial Recognition and iris scan to make unlocking the phone possible even in low light. The report reads: “Iris Scanner and Face Recognition together for better results even in low or very bright light.” However, the feature is not yet available on any of the Oreo beta builds currently available from Samsung.
It looks like both the authentication technologies will work together to negate each other’s shortcomings in challenging situations. Being called ‘Intelligent Scan’, we assume that the feature will smartly choose one option over the other, or even both of them simultaneously, based on the environment and lighting condition to accurately authenticate the user.
Facial recognition has been present on Android from its early days, but it wasn’t usable at all for its lack of accuracy. With the arrival of Face ID on iPhone X, facial recognition market shot up and suddenly every company wanted it on their phones. OnePlus 5T nailed it without using the sophisticated sensors Apple used and now Galaxy S9 should be the next to feature a better version of face recognition and iris scan.

Intelligent Scan is seemingly using the front-facing camera on the phone along with the iris scanner that is also present on the current Samsung flagships. It would take just a software update for Samsung to roll out the feature to the Galaxy S8 family and the Galaxy Note 8. For now, the feature might debut with the Galaxy S9 when it is launched next month right before the MWC 2018.
