Sometimes you may not find anybody around to help you. In such situations a safety app in your smartphone can save your life.
The Karnataka police on Thursday launched SOS - a free mobile phone app that will help people in emergency situations. The app has been launched for the benefit of women and senior citizens. The app was inaugurated by CM Siddaramaiah at Hassan on Thursday.
SOS is a powerful Personal Safety application that empowers you against acts of violence, and helps call aid in an emergency. It lets you send out SOS alerts to police, friends and family quickly, as soon as you sense danger. The alert is triggered by shaking the device using a customizable shake limit.
The app, which works on Android and iOS phones, will work once the caller register himself. So, if a person sends a call for help, the police station nearest to where the caller is will get the alert.
How it works:
SOS automatically sends an emergency message, the user’s location, device battery level, and a recorded audio clip of the situation to chosen contact with just a shake of the device.
The inconspicuous shake gesture allows you to get help effortlessly and discreetly without raising any suspicion. Calibrate the intensity of the shake to suit your needs. The one minute audio recording of your situation helps recipients know the kind of danger you’re in.
The GPS tracking helps recipients track you if you are being moved to a different location against your will.

bSafe, a Personal safety app supports both Apple iOS and Android devices, contains wide set of personal safety features. It can be used to privately alert friends that you’ve arrived at your destination and when you need real help, bSafe offers an audible alarm and immediately starts broadcasting video captured by your phone and your GPS location.
Information is continually collected and recorded, and is sharable with police should it prove necessary to do so. You can activate the alarm manually or you can use the Follow Me Timer mode, which which will automatically send an emergency SOS message if you don't check in before the timer runs out.
This is great for late nights or a little extra safety on your morning run when you only want to disturb people in an emergency.
The one drawback is that friends and family you designate as your guardians all have to load the app and create a bSafe profile.
