New Gear VR with USB-C leaks, Note 7 specs again

It has been rumored for some time now that Samsung would bring USB Type-C as the new Charging standard to its Galaxy Note 7, and even Evan Blass (VentureBeat reporter, a.k.a @evleaks) has confirmed it. We’ve seen a Galaxy Note 7 screen protector and even wall charger confirm the new charging standard (the charging port is present with a screen protector drawing and the wall charger has an output of 25W as opposed to the old 15W charging maximum for Samsung’s wall chargers). USB-C is confirmed once more in a new report, but, whereas Blass has confirmed USB-C with photos but no Gear VR, the source below has now provided a photo of the New Gear VR (yes, this is what Samsung intends to call its next-generation virtual reality headset).

The New Gear VR looks identical to the old Gear VR with the exception being that there is a “push mechanism” on the side of the device to lock the phone inside. The former Gear VR versions all required you to use a small door in front of your phone so as to prevent the phone from falling out. The New Gear VR does the same, but you’ll now have a push mechanism to help lock the phone in place. I actually remember having a few moments with my Gear VR where the tray would fall off and I’d have to put the tray back on. The push mechanism may well prevent that problem this time around.

Last but not least, we get the same Galaxy Note 7 specs confirmed by OnLeaks, a.k.a. Steve Hemmerstoffer, another famous leakster in the same camp as Evan Blass, that Blass himself confirmed, though he feels in more expected specs than before: a 5.7-inch, Super AMOLED display with a Quad HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440p, octa-core Exynos processor with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 5MP/12MP camera combo with optical image stabilization (OIS),  Dual Pixel phase detection autofocus, and f/1.7 apertures (aperture is for both cameras), USB-C charging, iris scanner, 3,500mAh battery, Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI overlay, and 64GB of internal storage with a microSD card for 256GB or more of additional storage.

The New Gear VR will be compatible with Samsung’s 2015 and 2016 high-end smartphones: Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, and, of course, the Galaxy Note 7. Considering that all 2015 and 2016 devices currently run micro-USB, and the Note 7 will be the first Galaxy to utilize USB-C, Samsung will likely incorporate some sort of transition adapter that makes micro-USB and USB-C capable at the same time. We’ll have to wait to hear from Samsung, but until then, check out the leaked photos below.
