LG announces the Quick Cover for the LG G5, a phone that is “yet-to-be-announced”

We’ve seen tech companies patent accessories and phones before bringing them to the market in a big way, but Korean manufacturer LG has gone and topped them all: the company just unveiled the date of its LG G5 announcement — set for February 21, just a few hours before its Seoul rival, Samsung, unveils the “next big thing.”

Now, just a few days after giving the LG G5 announcement date, LG has gone and unveiled its Quick Cover Case for the same smartphone. The most humorous part of it all is the fashion in which LG made the announcement. The company announced the LG G5 Quick Cover at its newsroom via a press release, calling the phone for which the case was designed the “yet-to-be-announced LG G5,” with the subtitle “introducing a case for a smartphone that does not officially exist.”

If the LG G5 doesn’t officially exist, then why announce a Quick Cover case? Tech enthusiasts will find this quite funny, considering that LG plans to introduce the LG G5 in just 8 days; if LG intends to introduce the LG G5 in a few days, then the phone already exists (even if in prototype stage, and even if there’s just one LG G5 already made). With that said, we understand what LG’s getting at, but it sounds as though the LG G5 prototype hasn’t even been made yet (though it has). If LG hasn’t made the LG G5 just yet, the Korean manufacturer better get to it — 8 days left to go! The humor is just too much.

The LG G5 Quick Cover is now touch-enabled, allowing you to answer calls and set alarms without opening the case and viewing the phone. In other words, your off-screen desires just got met in the LG G5 Quick Cover case. LG’s rival, top Android OEM Samsung Electronics, has already patented the Always On Display for its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and we expect the feature to be ready for primetime on the same day as LG’s G5 announcement.

The LG G5 Quick Cover announcement affirms some additional confirmations we’ve seen from the company in the last few days. LG mentions the Always On Display for the LG G5: “Users of the case can check the time, date and notifications on the Always-On Display of the yet unseen LG G5 even with the cover closed.” This gives away the Always On Display; although LG announced it at its LG Mobile Facebook page, this gives further confirmation to the feature. LG says that the LG G5 Quick Cover case will be available to view at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 on February 21st in Barcelona, Spain, so it seems as though the case will be ready for primetime right away after the official announcement.

The LG G5 is yet to be announced, but the official announcement is right around the corner. In addition to the Quick Cover Case that will serve as a formidable accessory, the LG G5 will feature a 5.5-inch, Quad HD display (2,560 x 1,440p screen resolution), a quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB with a microSD card for expandable storage, an 8MP front camera, 20MP back camera, a 3,000mAh removable battery with a magic slot used for VR, Bluetooth, and other headsets, a metal body, and running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. LG will announce the LG G5 at its press event at MWC 2016 on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 2PM local time. We’ve also heard about a dual camera setup for the LG G5, not to mention the edge notifications found on the V10.
