How Internet Providers Can Help Africa Connect To The World?

Africa is one of the most lagged behind the continent when it comes to internet and satellite connectivity in Africa. Africa has the least number of ISP subscription, IXP hosts and internet users compared to the rest of the world. Countries Like South Africa, Egypt, Morocco and Mauritius have more than 50% of internet users than the rest of the continent, that is because of modernism and tourism factor which goes around with these nations.

State of internet in Africa

While Africa is still going through the stage of development in internet connectivity, it is actually also one of the fastest-growing in the world. Telecommunication and internet services have taken a leap after the start of the new century.

Internet providers are shifting their focus on wireless broadband access technologies to provide more and users around the region. In 2007 International Telecommunication Union held a meeting in Rwanda as they felt a need to take a big step towards the “Telecommunication revolution” in the continent Africa. Several Projects have been going towards this direction of making Africa one of the most internet using continents. Since 2000,internet traffic, a number of hosts and ISP subscriptions, has boomed in Africa.

Countries Like Somalia and Kenya has developed the most in terms of a number of Internet users in the African countries even though growing growth of these Africa countries is great. But they still do not stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the world. Morocco with 57%, has the highest number of Internet users in Africa by the end of 2015. The percentage would have gotten much higher now.

Problems affecting the expansion of internet

Some of the biggest hurdles for easy internet access are a limited number of people having knowledge of computers, expensive rates of internet, Poor Infrastructure etc. Poor infrastructure, literacy of computer etc. are the problems that can’t be fixed by Internet companies; however, even one cheap internet provider in Africa can really bring the revolution. We can take the example of India’s Reliance Jio telecom service which came, see and conquered the Indian market due to their cheap internet plans and also 4G keypad phones which were so affordable for the lower middle class or even for underprivileged part of the country. More Cheap Internet Provider services have required the continent.; However, some have already taken the initiative.

The most popular internet services are based on VSAT internet in Africa. VSAT works on Satellite signals from their earth station established in Belgium’s capital Brussels. They provide one of the best Internet services on the continent.

Initiatives have been being taken, and Internet accessibility seems to get only better in the coming years as the effects of globalisation are felt in Africa.
