eLearning vs Traditional Learning

It’s 2019 and there are more methods of Learning than ever before but people are still hesitant to explore unconventional ways of learning, why? Well we’re here to compare the differences of e learning and Traditional Learning, hopefully giving you traditional learners a little more clarity on what it is that makes eLearning so popular recently.

s

Where?

s

One of the most obvious differences between the two methods of learning is where you learn. With traditional learning you are typically classroom-bound, having to leave your home or workplace to attend a class or lecture which is where you will consume all of the information. Alternatively, with eLearning, you have the ability to learn anywhere with an internet connection. As the learning content is all online, this means you don’t have to travel anywhere to retrieve the information but can instead learn from the comfort of your own home or on the go at a local cafe for example.

s

Who?

s

With traditional learning, a qualified teacher would be getting paid to undertake the class/lecture, as said above, at a stated learning centre. The teacher would run you through the course content in the given course time and you would be responsible for making efficient notes. However, with eLearning this is quite different as there is no physical teacher. With eLearning there is instead a virtual teacher that is created into the course software, as this is not a real person and not time restricted, you have the ability to take as much as time as you require with the content being taught.

s

When?

s

As expected, traditional learning takes quite some time to organise especially if you’re an employer sending a lot of staff, you’re left having to consider what days people can do, where they can travel to and what times are suitable. Well once all of this information is considered, a day-long course is usually booked and that time is taken out of the employee’s working hours. With eLearning, you have the ability to learn whenever is convenient for you and your employee. As the content is all within a learning portal and is accessible to anyone with an internet connection, this gives you the flexibility to work whenever is suitable for you, be it at work when you have down time or at home when you’re in a more relaxed environment.

s

Attitude

s

Most commonly with traditional learning, the employee’s superior will instruct them to go on a course on a given date and time. This often gives the employee a more negative attitude towards the course as there is not much self-direction. With eLearning, besides setting up, there is less instruction and more responsibility on the learner to take it upon themselves to learn when and where they desire. This extra responsibility on the learner allows them to discipline themselves more and have a more focused attitude towards education.

s

Requirements

s

With traditional learning, there are less requirements from the learner as much of these requirements are expected from the teacher. For example, there is little reading required from the learner as it is the teachers duty to have read and compacted the content into digestible information to communicate to the learne. There are also no technical requirements from the learner as in traditional learning you are expected to absorb all of the information there and then or take notes to revise later.

d

Alternatively, with eLearning, as the content is all online and in a virtual system, you are not required to make notes with a pen and paper but are expected to undertake sometimes lengthy independent reading to ensure you understand the given topic in depth. As well as this, basic IT skills are required to navigate the system but this is made as simple as possible to ensure all levels of IT compatibility are catered for.

s

These requirements often identify how the two styles of learning are favoured by adults and children. For example, children have the freedom of not having a job, therefore have the time and flexibility for traditional learning, as well as needing the guidance given by a teacher. On the other hand, adults tend to have a busier schedule and don’t require the attention of a teacher but instead have more self discipline and direction, favouring eLearning.
